The white squirrel of the West End

White squirrel

Darrel Daniel was walking through the West End apartment complex today and came upon a white squirrel, just like the late, lamented Albino Squrrel of Jamaica Pond.

There are at least two white squirrels at the West End complex, as I have seen two together.

There are about 4 of them now. The original one was there for years and appears to have settled down & started a family. The older people who live in Charles River Park are very protective of them -- a little too protective, perhaps. Regular feeding has made all the squirrels in the park very comfortable around people, eating from the picnic tables at the pool, hopping in people's purses, one of them even jumped in and swam across the pool last weekend.

Last years my husband and I met photographer, Sylvia Zarco who told us she has been photographing this group of white squirrels in Charles River Park for a few years. A few of her shots of them are available on this page.
