Nobody remembers the guy who gave the first address at Gettysburg

But he was a Dot rat. The Dorchester Reporter introduces us to Edward Everett (yes, the guy the pear square is named for), who spoke for two hours at Gettysburg before Abe Lincoln got up to give that short address.

Lived in the Town as an adult.

Was president of Harvard, too, along the way, so he may have lived in the People's Republic as well.

in Cambridge, MA. I'd recommend visiting his monument there.

I'm imagining a modern day version of how that would go.

"Oh, I heard Lincoln last night. He did the Gettysburg Address."

"No way! Cool. Who opened for him?"

"I can't remember. Some dude from Massachusetts. Went on FOREVER."

Actually, at that time it was:

"I heard Edward Everett last night. He spoke for hours! It was marvelous!"

"Wasn't Lincoln on the bill, too?"

"Yeah, but only for a minute or so. No one was paying attention."
