The attack should have been caught on video. The way the report reads it sound like the brutal and vicious attacks that are happening nationwide.

If by "happening nationwide" you mean "no more frequently than they have been in the past few decades", then yes. This whole "knockout game" is just reports of random assaults that some media outlets decided were an organized racially-motivated epidemic. Relax. Your odds of getting jumped are the same as they were 5 years ago.

It's genuinely amazing that, within a few short months, conservatives have managed to turn every unprovoked assault by a black male into a nationwide conspiracy to beat up nonwhites for funsies. A real masterwork of fascist propaganda.

Get your head out of the sand. This is a stupid social network inspired fad for thugs. It had been happening for years in a few gang infested cities and has been on the uptick now that everyone has a video capable phone of sharing their stupidity with the world via the internet.

Could you provide some more information here other than "I've heard tell"?

This sort of thing can - and has - been investigated on a national basis using crime statistics. All such analyses that I've seen indicate that crime is down overall, and there is no clear pattern or even increase or change in the geographic pattern of these assaults.

Unless you can get Nate Silver or others to demonstrate otherwise, what we have here is a social-media generated panic with no substantiation.

Any data at all? Any reason to believe that this is anything other than a completely manufactured non-issue?

The Washington Times report the knockout game has spread to prisons and the victims are usually black female correction officers who suffer the same brutal assaults and injuries such as fractured eye sockets and broken jaws. We should support the victims and condemn the actions of the thugs as Reverend Al Sharpton did the other day.

Is there any evidence whatsoever to suggest that the "knockout game" is an actual thing?

The Washington Times

pffffft.

Not especially.

Simply a question of whether or not you believe "data" is the plural of "anecdote." I don't find the CNN article either informative or convincing.

The knockout game has spread to prisons? Really? People are beating up prison guards for fun now? Are you kidding me? Do you have brain cells?

Why oh why do I read the comments on news articles?

If you want to get your news from a Moonie owned newspaper that also employs noted racist Jeff Kuhner, then good luck to you.

Why do some jurisdictions have laws specifically calling out assault on a public transit employee as a separate crime? Why is assaulting a transit employee a far more serious crime than assaulting a grandmother, or a dentist, or a convenience store clerk?

Massachusetts treats assault on elderly differently, where "elderly" is defined as over 60. When in doubt, ask for ID.

I believe it's generally included in laws with greater penalties for assaulting police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, etc. The rationale is probably supposed to be something about the effects on society - you put a convenience store clerk in the hospital and a few people can't get sodas or candy or what-have-you, whereas you take one of the others off the job and you put people's lives in danger or disrupt the movements of hundreds of people or something.

Maybe it wasn't the knockout game all we know is a t-employee was almost beaten to death for no reason. The T employees and passengers appear to be on the verge of nervous breakdowns because of the frigid temperatures, cattle cars and service disruptions. A Customer agent told me yesterday about a brawl yesterday morning at Quincy Center between Asian, Black and White passengers and the media is reporting a latino was arrested for knocking out another passenger at the same station. Gay passengers defended themselves against a hate crime attack last week on a bus. What is it that causing such rage and anger among passengers of all races the minute they enter the MBTA.
