Convicted rapist pleads guilty to raping woman in her Beacon Hill apartment

Williams

Anthony Williams pleaded guilty to aggravated rape and kidnapping today and was sentenced to 18 to 22 years in state prison, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Williams admitted in Suffolk Superior Court that early on Nov. 10, 2012, he forced his way into an apartment at Joy and Myrtle streets, then raped its occupant and robbed her.

Williams had previously been convicted of a 1996 rape in Salem.

Suffolk County DA Dan Conley had sought 25 to 28 years for the Beacon Hill attack:

First, this crime was not average. It was as vicious and terrifying as can be imagined. Second, the defendant had just finished a lengthy state prison term for the same offense. He has additional convictions for crimes of violence against women. He needs to be taken off the street and away from society. Moreover, a review of his record suggests that he’s a candidate for civil commitment under the state’s sexually dangerous person statute, which would allow him to be held even after his release from prison.

The DA's office says Williams followed his victim home:

He followed her into her apartment building and, as she entered her apartment, forced his way inside, where he robbed her of jewelry, electronic devices, and her bank card. He then sexually assaulted her at knifepoint and threatened to return and kill her if the ATM password she provided was incorrect.

The victim was able to contact a neighbor, who called 911. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment, while Boston Police sexual assault detectives undertook a search for evidence and witnesses. Among other things, they were able to retrieve footage from a bank lobby where Williams used the victim’s debit card and additional footage showing him selling her iPad and iPhone. When detectives released it to the public, they received multiple tips identifying him, leading to his arrest.

Feels like a soft sentence for a second rape conviction no? Was life even on the table??

Unfortunately, life was not an option in sentencing.

Per Massachusetts sentencing guidelines 18-22 leans towards the middle to higher end of most severe sentence than can be given for aggravated rape. Of course, he is eligible for parole after 2/3 of the sentence.

Rape is punishable by "Life or any term of years." Of course, if you're sentenced to life on anything but first degree murder you're automatically parole eligible after 15 years. If you're sentenced to 18-22, you have to serve at least 18 (the lower end of the range, not 2/3 of higher end).

Because I'm sure both of his victims will feel the emotional scars everyday for the rest of their lives. Such is the MA judicial system I suppose

No harsh sentence for kidnapping? I thought the feds hit harder for that.

If you are convicted of a violent sexual crime, including the non-violent violation of children, you should never breath free air for the rest of your life. Also, sexual crimes should be prosecuted at the federal level. I feel that's a straight forward guidline that most non-rapist types can get behind.

Yeah, uhm, this is America -- where even rape can be contorted into a party line issue.

... what clause of the Constitution do you think gives the Federal government the right to investigate or prosecute crime of any kind, sexual or otherwise?

This guy needs to be put behind bars before he goes out and commits the same sort of horrific crimes against other women and scars them for life, both physically and psychologically!

How did this guy slip through the cracks and end up back on the street???
