Southie man charged with Cumbie's holdup

Boston Police report Peter Farrell, 22, managed to rob the Cumberland Farms at 628 E. 5th St. on Sunday even though the gloves he was wearing meant he couldn't operate the touch-screen cash register to open it.

Police say Farrell walked into the store as a clerk was closing it around 10:55 p.m., went around the counter and threatened the clerk with a knife:

The suspect ordered the victim to the ground and started to steal money from the cash safe. After stealing from cash safe, the suspect then attempted to open the touch screen cash register, but was unable to do so due to the fact that he was wearing gloves. The suspect then demanded the victim to open the cash register, to which the victim complied. The suspect fled the scene with an unknown amount of US Currency.

Thanks in part to surveillance video, detectives were quickly able to finger Farrell as the suspect. They arrested him at home yesterday, police say.

Innocent, etc.

Since I care about my SoBo community I think it's time we have an honest, open debate about the quality of life in SoBo.

It appears most life long residents support racial profiling and stop and frisk. Most of the crime in SoBo is committed by white males between the ages of 13 and 50 (I was going to say 35 but didn't about a couple of townies in the their late 40s rob a store a couple weeks ago?).

So do you support racial profiling and stop and frisk for that demographic? Also, the male would need to look, dress and speak in a certain way in order to be stopped. Wouldn't this make SoBo safer and reduce crime?

It's creep drug addicts that's the problem. I was in the Tedeschi's on Broadway & H earlier and the place is full of them.

You can also argue a lot of the "seriously" violent crime in Southie is by Hispanics (think Amy Lord, the older man that was beat up over a parking spot, Edwin Santos who was murdered at Bell's in November 2013, shooting at Stadium in September 2013, Martin Jimenez and his attempted murder of his GF in June 2013, the shooting on E 8th / Old Harbor in June 2013)... Yeah, believe me, there are some white males who also are making this place unsafe via drugs, robberies, and assaults, but at this point, I'd say it's 50/50.

Please for the love of God , don't call it SOBO. It's rotten to those of us who are actually FROM this community. Also, it's pretty unfair to make generalizations about an entire community when there are morons and drug addicts in every single community . Even the fancy little ones people who call Southie "SOBO" are from.

Nobody on God's green earth calls it SoBo, not even the self-styled SoBoYuppie. He's just trying to get a cheap rise out of longtime Southie residents, and manages to reel someone in here every single time. Stop hitting yourself.

But non-whites do seem to commit more crimes than their share of the population would indicate.

That's not racism, that's math.

"We perform a field experiment to measure racial discrimination in the labor market. We respond with fictitious resumes to help-wanted ads in Boston and Chicago newspapers. To manipulate perception of race, each resume is assigned either a very African American sounding name or a very White sounding name. The results show significant discrimination against African-American names: White names receive 50 percent more callbacks for interviews." - "Are Emily and Greg More Employable than Lakisha and Jamal?", National Bureau of Economic Research, 2003, http://www.nber.org/papers/w9873

"The Institute used trained testers who are White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic to inquire about randomly selected properties in their testing region. The testers in the paired groupings matched in age, gender, family structure, and earnings. On paper, these testers were qualified buyers or renters and secretly recorded the treatment they received while in the field.
It was found that African-American home buyers learned about the existence of 17 percent fewer homes and were shown 18 percent fewer properties. On the renters’ side, 11 percent fewer units were “advertised as available” while they were shown 4 percent less units than Whites. Hispanic testers faced less discrimination, with renters learning about 12 percent less of available units, although they were shown 7 percent fewer available rental properties." - http://newsone.com/2582141/hud-study-housing-discrimination/

It's not political correctness - it's science.

The resume study conflates race with cultural group membership..

I suspect that while "Billy Bob" and "Thurston" are both very "white" sounding names, they would receive very different treatment in the initial hiring screen.

Someone who rejects an "Antwan" may well be doing it for cultural reasons rather than racial prejudice.

The bottom line is that people face discrimination based on completely bullshit reasons ... regardless of the nature of the bullshit prejudices involved.

Discrimination on the basis of race is illegal. Discrimination on the basis of perceived cultural group affiliation is not.

"Discrimination on the basis of race is illegal. Discrimination on the basis of perceived cultural group affiliation is not."

It's completely illegal! Especially if that "cultural group" is "working-class black folks." You're using Confederate weasel-words to justify white supremacy.

Nor does the name "Antwan" say anything about its owner, unless my being named Nick indicates that I have a predilection to establishing dictatorships in Romania.
