Monkeying around on the T late at night

Red Line antics

Dan Meade reports on riding all four subway lines (and the Silver Line) on their first two nights of extended weekend service:

2:31 AM – On the Red Line, the “Boston T Party” runs into another crew celebrating the late night service. A light gymnastics competition ensues.

Damn it, man, get your feet off the seats!

It appears that man would have made one hell of a court jester.

As hard as it might be for some brain dead late night T riding gymnasts to believe, some people actually use those straps during the morning commute into this thing called work.

That is, when the train is actually operational and not broken down.

Wait until this starts happening more often, and people will be decidedly less ecstatic about subway gymnasts.

What's the story with the guy with the red hands? Are those gloves?

Also wondering about that trail of liquid in the middle of the floor (but not wondering too much - I just had breakfast.)

The all too common "somebody threw a dunks cup on the floor with some stuff still in it" (or bottle).

Then it rolls as the train moves, making the trail.

I am sure the companies that put up some sponsorship dough must be getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about money well spent ,looking at this picture. Maybe I'll take a ride to Buzzy's some night .....

I can tell you haven't been to Charles Circle in like over a decade, Buzzy's has been gone for almost a decade now, maybe longer.

Last time i went there was summer 2000 I think...

(and if I'm wrong and it just moved to a new location. anyone care to share the new location?)

If it moved to a new location, that location wasn't anywhere near Charles Circle.

You're correct, though, that Buzzy's has been gone from that location for at least 10 years. Its leaving coincided with MGH expansion and the conversion of the Charles Street Jail (or at least planning for the conversion) to a hotel.

the companies that the T has extorted funds from participate in this program consider their money well spent, regardless of what the passengers using the service do on the trains.

You need one. "extort" means this

ex·tort [ik-stawrt]
verb (used with object)
1. Law.
a. to wrest or wring (money, information, etc.) from a person by violence, intimidation, or abuse of authority; obtain by force, torture, threat, or the like.
b. to take illegally by reason of one's office.

Last time I checked, they weren't taking money by force. Companies willingly paid for this... big difference.

*sad trombone sound* Nice try tho, now here's Rod Roddy with your departing gift.

PUBLIC transportation system that is supposed to be funded by fare paying passengers and OUR tax dollars. Yet they still insist on separating PRIVATE companies from their money by pleading poverty, despite the fact they continue to waste their money on "necessary" things like pointless environmental studies, needless public meetings and neighborhood "design committees, and totally unnecessary "enhancements" like public art.

So, yes, what the MBTA is doing is still extortion, even if they manage to convince companies who are too naïve and/or profit hungry to realize that 95% of the money they spend on advertising is just being flushed down the dumper with no real return on investment. But I guess that's what happens when you have a system where supposed "for-profit" companies can write off their losses at tax collection time (which the MBTA cannot do).

I do not think it means what you think it means.

reality. The companies that buy ads, whether commerical entities or non-profits, usually track results, and if the ads don't generate a decent return on investment, they spend those dollars elsewhere the next time their ad budget allows. There's no coercion involved. Anywhere. At all.

id·i·ot [id-ee-uht]
noun
1. Informal. an utterly foolish or senseless person: If you think you can wear that outfit to a job interview and get hired, you're an idiot!
2. Psychology . (no longer in technical use; considered offensive) a person of the lowest order in a former and discarded classification of mental retardation, having a mental age of less than three years old and an intelligence quotient under 25.

I'm guessing you fall under #2 ? You're that special kind of person, right?

Yet they still insist on separating PRIVATE companies from their money by pleading poverty, despite the fact they continue to waste their money on "necessary" things like pointless environmental studies, needless public meetings and neighborhood "design committees, and totally unnecessary "enhancements" like public art

Right, because PUBLIC INPUT on PUBLIC transportation isn't needed. PUBLIC INPUT isn't needed on how PUBLIC (read: YOUR) tax dollars are spent. You just want the MBTA to willy-nilly to spend money just how it sees fit. Much like PRIVATE corporations do.. you know the same ones who give CEO's golden parachutes?

and RIGHT, because PUBLIC INPUT isn't required when they want to build a station or what not because the PUBLIC INPUT does not matter, according to you?

I mean, what you're saying is, it's OK to just bulldoze an entire neighborhood, without any PUBLIC INPUT, with the exception of "you have till tomorrow to get out" notices stapled to people's door. So we can safely assume that your house will be the first go get knocked down so I can put up a honking, ugly, grey and steel bus stop, even if I don't take up the entire property and even if its totally ugly, because PUBLIC INPUT does not matter according to you, right?

Oh and RIGHT, because all of these environmental meetings have absolutely NOTHING to do that its required EPA and the Federal Government. And some of these meetings are REQUIRED in order to get our tax dollars used to FUND such a project. Right?

So, yes, what the MBTA is doing is still extortion, even if they manage to convince companies who are too naïve and/or profit hungry to realize that 95% of the money they spend on advertising is just being flushed down the dumper with no real return on investment. But I guess that's what happens when you have a system where supposed "for-profit" companies can write off their losses at tax collection time (which the MBTA cannot do).

Uh yeah no, it's not. No one is using force to get money. No one. I didn't see Dr Scott hold this CEO's president hostage and say 'GIMME THE MONEY OR ELSE"? So yeah it's not extortion.

Oh yeah, one more thing... did you ever think that these contracts have been vetting by large legal teams of accountants, lawyers, and even more lawyers? Yeah I didn't think so. I think these companies are WELL aware what they are getting into. *eye roll*

Welcome to Uhub, anon. You just got served. Thanks for playing.
