Smoked meats? Tasty Burger wants to open up in fume-filled Back Bay station

Tasty Burger thinks there's a market for a burger bar that also serves up beer and wine in the diesel-filled confines of Back Bay station.

The local chain goes before the Boston Licensing Board next week for permission to buy the beer and wine license of the defunct Parlor Pizza in West Roxbury for a proposed restaurant that would also feature 30 patio seats on Dartmouth Street - as well as entrances on both Dartmouth and Clarendon.

In addition to permission to buy the beer and wine license, Tasty Burger is also seeking permission to stay open until 2 a.m.

Back Bay currently features one of the city's better burrito stands, a hot-dog stand, a beef-patty stand and, this being Boston and all, two Dunkin' Donuts.

and the familiar fume smell was non existent in the waiting area. But you still get choked when you have to wait on the platform for your train.

Aside from that, the station is still, well "gross". I have yet to venture back to the ladies room since my eyes are still traumatized from my last visit from what I found in there.

I do like the burrito stand and having a chance to get a tasty burger and beer is, nevertheless, very appealing.

Why is it so horrible on that platform and why is black soot coming out of every crack and crevice in the waiting area? There must be something they can do to better ventilate that tunnel.

What I don't understand is why does one need to purchase a wine and beer license from another business?

Why can't they just "get" it with approval (if the board will allow for it)?

The state legislature sets the number of liquor licenses in Boston (with a set number for each of beer and wine, all alcohol and retail stores). Whatever the number is (which, having a mind like a sieve, I can't remember offhand), Boston has basically reached it for restaurants. So if a restaurant wants to serve beer and wine, it either has to hope against hope that somebody else has either turned in or lost their license (it does happen every once in a great while) or go out and try to buy somebody else's license - and then seek board permission for that (which is generally granted, short of the licensee being a foreign national with a criminal record or overwhelming neighborhood opposition).

City Councilor Ayanna Pressley has filed a home-rule petition that would let Boston basically set the number of liquor licenses and grant licenses that could only be used in certain non-downtownish commercial districts (given that, currently, a large number of licenses have been sucked out of the outer neighborhoods by national chains).

There are no new liquor licenses. Occasionally they make a few new ones but they cost about the same once you pay for the one lawyer who can game the system and grease the right palms.

Welcome to Massachusetts.

I'd go to this location. beats their harvard square or out-of-the-way Fenway location.

At least you can THINK it isn't inside a T station because that pizza place an entrance facing the outside and not just inside the station.

They would be just adding to the smog with the grease filled exhaust.

Using the "Space F-7" detail in the agenda and a little Googlefu, I found this map, which shows Tasty Burger's proposed location, F-7, as spanning the old convenience store and the adjacent space. (That also explains the "two entrances" from Dartmouth in the agenda item.) But doesn't that include where passes are now sold?

The MBTA TAP office moved to Downtown Crossing when the Charlie Card Store opened. It's all in one (useless) location now.

What location in the station would this be? I can't envision a restaurant stretching the width with an entrance on both Dartmouth St and Clarendon Sts.

Decent space, right near the Dunkin Donuts on the side where you purchase tickets.

So the convenience store goes away, and then potentially there is a direct Dartmouth Street entrance, and the "Clarendon St" entrance just means access to the Tasty via the station itself?

And the homeless encampment on Dartmouth shares space with their terrace or relocates I guess...

Or am I reading the map wrong?

Yep. Except the c-store closed about a month ago.
