Hey, kids: When you're done trashing the Arboretum, don't leave your phone behind

Trash at the Arnold Arboretum

Last week, Erica Fletcher posted a photo of some of the remains of a killer party at the top of the Arboretum's Hemlock Hill, and asked City Councilor Matt O'Malley for some city help in cleaning it up.

O'Malley and Fletcher report the mess got cleaned up alright - by the culprits themselves. Of course, they didn't do it out of the goodness of their hearts - seems one of the kiddies left his or her phone behind and police had a little chat with the parents.

Fact: Animal control and Park rangers dont cite unleashed dog owners because they have to be verbally warned first.(What kinda S##t is that lol, leash law is well known, and posted throughout the arbs) this impedes any effectice enforcement. No more getting out of fidos way on my bike, thats a promise.

it's a little foolish to threaten one unlawful activity with another, no? I'm assuming as well that you're biking only on the paved paths as per Arboretum rules?

Hey, it's not the dog's fault the owner is a tool. Aim for them instead!!

Nope. That clearly wont work, unless its their dogs being affected

Just FYI...one of the reasons this is happening on Hemlock Hill and not the Peters Hill side of the arboretum is that the dog people tend not to go to Hemlock Hill. The dog people clean up the trash they find when they're out there early in the morning, before anyone else gets there. And the teenagers who are responsible for the damage that this article is all about tend not to go where the dog people are. Let's just keep a little perspective here... and try to remember what the arboretum was like in the 1980s and 1990s, before it became a popular spot for dog owners.

As Adam Kessel reminds us, when trashing the Ahbs, don't leave your Boston Latin notebook behind.

Is this the new thing the suburban transplants are complaining about? Kids have been partying there for generations, so please, shut the fuck up about it. Why don't you make yourself useful and do something about the serious crime in Roslindale, e.g. murders, muggings, stabbings, etc. Oh, wait, that stuff goes on at the OTHER end of Washington St.

Yeah, God forbid people complain about a park getting trashed.

The news isn't that that happened, but that some kid was stupid enough to leave his phone behind.

You wrote about it last week, so it's obviously gaining some steam.

I apologize for caring more about the violent crimes than cleaning up after a bunch of geeks from Latin who robbed daddy's beer fridge.

Why not go comment on one of those threads? It's not like a post on the Arbs party crews or turkeys in Brookline is pushing serious crime off the front page.

You care more than 'the transplants'. How noble.

So Veronica Mars, how exactly are you personally working to solve the various unsolved murders around town? I'd like some pointers on how to get involved.

1. I've been involved in Big Brothers for years.

2. Volunteer at gyms around the city helping with boxing programs.

3. Involved with city government

Gee Vaughn, seems like I've done my part to help the younger generation stay off the streets. If more people were involved maybe we could help with this crime epidemic that is strangling the city right now, but no, you'd rather complain to the parks department about some broken bottles and Burger King wrappers.

Nice with the Veronica Mars insult - I wish I could think of a cute name for a useless twat like you, but I'm not that creative.

Seriously.

However, it's not a zero sum game. Should they cancel the renovation of Adams park to funnel those resources to crime prevention? Should the Easter Egg hunt have been cancelled to funnel that community effort to crime prevention? I think to have a vibrant city, we have to recognize that lots of different people will care about and be involved with different things. No-one is claiming the unsolved murders are less important than Arboretum garbage. I think for you to claim that caring about the park garbage issue is some how impacting efforts to reduce crime though is just extreme. The Parks Dept. isn't going to start foot patrols in Archdale regardless of whether there is garbage or not.

I could care less about how long someone has lived in the city FYI. I'd bet a lot of money that the good works being done by citizens and the crimes being committed are equal proportionately between multigenerational residents and newcomers.

completely agree. Of all places this is the best places for kids to go, safe, near a hosptital incase things go wrong and out of sight. if a trashcan was put up there the problem wouldn't exist.

Kids have been partying everywhere for generations in places where the police won't bother them and people everywhere have been complaining about it. It's a public space, there's no right to trash it as a rite of passage.

I didn't know the parks dept. was supposed to team up with local news bloggers to solve murders.

We live near an area where there were tons of parties in years past. I used to send my boys out with big bags to reap the empties, and let them have the money when we cashed them in.

Now they have no interest in "nasty beer parties". I wonder why?

I also used to sit on my stoop and warn those traversing the street with trapezoidal paper bags that their flip flops and the poison ivy in the woods didn't mix. I usually mentioned the 3' long milksnakes, too.

I think the culture must have changed some, as there haven't been many of these events in recent years.

If you wouldn't let your kids trash the Museum of Fine Arts or the Gardner this way, why is it OK for them to do it in the Arboretum?

The problem isn't that the kids are partying, it's that they are leaving a mess behind. Pack it in, pack it out, leave no trace.

We did the same things back in the day & learn we only got in trouble with extra cops or rangers if we left a mess. So we always brought a large trash bag. Problem solved. Now let the cops deal with the real crimes.

Umm...the topic of the post is about kids trashing areas of the arboretum with parties not dog owners. I agree that IRRESPONSIBLE dog owners are an issue but as someone who has walked, ran and photographed in the arb that's about 10%. I have even seen dog owners PICK UP the trash left behind those who party. I don't think it's right to demonize the dog owners, especially when that's not the point of the article. And if you see an irresponsible dog owner, say something. I notice dog pick up is more of an issue in the winter bc owners either can't find it in the snow or are lazy to hike in 50 + feet in a foot of snow to pick up. I'm not saying this is right. I'm just saying it's a fact. Bottom line for me is that leashed or not, dogs should be under control by owners. And owners need to be responsible. And if I need a new phone cuz I drop mine (again) I need to be a scavenger at the nearest party site.
