Just when you thought Dan Shaughnessy had the stupidest thing to say about the World Cup

Along comes Eddie Andelman to tweet:

the 19 million who watched the world cup clearly illustrates the vast number of illegals within the borders of U.S. A.

UPDATE: Andelman has deleted the tweet, but don't worry, he left up the other racist tweets that nobody's called him on yet.

In any event, is he talking about last week's match against Portugal (I think that 19M was the number)? If so, then that's even sillier than it sounds, since presumably most of the people watching the US match in the US were cheering for the US (unless, I suppose, there has been a major onslaught of illegal immigration from Portugal that I haven't heard about).

In any event, all of this nonsense is the follow-on to Ann Coulter's silly post last week. I won't link to it on principle, but I will say that I found her great-grandfather comment really, really offensive, as my great-grandfather was not born in the US and you could not find a man who was more proud to be (and become) American.

There is also an irony of the Coulter's argument is bit about the great-grandfathers. Many of them (though at this point of time, declining rapid due to age - but definitely great-great-grandfathers) were soccer fans. There was a time soccer was only second to baseball in popularity.

But unlike MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL, its equivalent somehow manage to shoot itself in the foot into obscurity. Thus the younger grandfathers and fathers never picked it up.

oh good, he and that vapid snatch otherwise known as Ann Coulter would make a great match.

Then again rumor has it Ann is really a man in drag.. but who knows Eddie may be into that.

I'm all for free-wheeling, unfettered discourse online, and salute cybah's right to make vulgar ad hominem attacks against a person only tangentially related to this post.

That said, if 'Ann Coulter' were replaced with 'Hillary Clinton' or 'Elizabeth Warren,' then the PC Brigade would be out in droves with pitchforks and torches. Very disappointed that the outrage machine isn't working today.

bomb-tosser, a skilled charlatan whose job is to inflame a base of rightie half-wits with bigotry of various stripes, mainly racism, xenophobia, and homophobia. I don't imagine she believes half the hateful, inflammatory BS she spews, but she makes a tidy living from it. She's a clown entertaining clowns.

Comparing her to serious, accomplished academics and politicians like Warren and Clinton because both have ardent fans at opposite ends of the political spectrum is kind of adorable in its naivete.

I believe what Lunchbox was trying to say, is that even though most of us probably consider Ann Coulter to be vile and dispicable, that's not a free pass for misogynist and transphobic comments.

She used Warren and Clinton as examples because they're women, not because they are on par with Coulter intellectually, socially, politically, etc.

up
Voting closed 0

then I agree.

I lost my capacity for outrage at Coulter's comments long ago: she's a barking circus performer, a trained seal on a unicycle, not a legitimate political analyst, and only the thickest and most hateful righties take her seriously.

But it's never appropriate to denigrate someone, however cynical their exploitation of bigotry, with bigoted language. It's especially surprising to hear from someone who has undoubtedly been at the receiving end of similarly ugly, phobic speech.

Ann Coulter chose to run her mouth about soccer being unamerican.

That's not tangential - that's referential.

Although we could do without the "must be a transperson" comments, because there is nothing wrong with that if she is. I don't care to speculate what her "true" gender is, and don't care if she chooses to present as female. It doesn't matter - she's a vile human being regardless of chromosome arrangement or packaging, and that's all that matters.

up
Voting closed 0

Tangent, but dressing in drag does not automatically make someone a member of the 0.01% or so of the population that suffers from gender identity disorder.

up
Voting closed 0

But, again, it is irrelevant.

Ann Coulter presents as female, so she's female for all that it matters in public. It doesn't matter why she chooses to present as female, or whether her parts or genes match. She's still a massive douchebag, irrespective of packaging.

I hate Ann Coulter
I'm not PC (and most of you should understand that by now)
I'm also a homosexual male
I'll call someone whatever I see fit, and considering how she trashes everything and everyone, she deserves it.

But thanks for expressing your opinion. It means as much to me what you had for dinner last night. Thanks again! *smile*

PS - Save your rebuttal for someone who cares, because I just don't give a rats ass.

I have a Republican strategist as a client. Pretty big one. Anyhoo, they tell me that in a drunken moment of reflection, Ann Coulter once confided to them that she'd give every penny back just to get people to stop spitting on her at airports.

Which is nice.

up

Because every time she opens her mouth, she doubles down on the last thing she said.

Even when they are shooting the shit, never trust what a Republican strategist tells you.

no one has ever actually spit on Ann Coulter in an airport -- it's just one of her many ugly fairy tales, another ridiculous fantasy of liberal bogeymen; and

b) she'd gladly endure buckets of actual hate-saliva to earn the hundreds of thousands of dollars she's made off of gullible, hateful right-wing chumps, probably feels a little guilty at how easy it is. Bet she's the crying-on-the-inside kind of clown.

The Andelman boys are at their worst, and that's saying something, when their corpo masters are threatened. Their unstinting, ham-handed (pun intended) opposition to increasing the minimum tipping wage from it's current $2.63/hour to something reasonable is as whore-like a performance as you're likely to see anywhere around here.

Growing up in NH soccer was fairly popular and it had nothing to do with liberals and/or conservatives. Not everything has to be politicized. How warped some people have become.

I don't know about everyone else, but soccer was omni-present in primary school and junior high when I was kid. My cousin played in high school, there were adult leagues in my city.
So my guess, pretty much every american kid plays it in PE, then? unamerican my foot....ball.

I think the big interest and crowds in futbol paralles the ascendancy of especially our Latino/Hispanic population from formerly mostly Caribbean islander to Central American. Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Mexicans love their futbol, unlike Puerto Ricans and Dominicans (the traditional Latino population in the northeast) and baseball. And our large Brazilian populations adds to it.

up
Voting closed 0

Another HUGE part of it is that we have a large, US-born age cohort reaching adulthood, many of whom were the source of great handwringing and whining when they took a pass on little league in favor of the many massively popular multitudes of youth soccer leagues in the US.

Anybody remember that bit of whining about UNAMERICAN soccer causing t-ball teams to falter? It was all the rage amongst the wingnut pundit set about 10-15 years ago.

Add in those of us middle-aged folk who both played as kids and coached all these youth soccer teams as adults, and all the grandparents who were at each and every game ...

up

and I said part of the popularity now of futbol (soccer), and world cup here us the huge influx of Central Americans. Part of the reason. I'm aware soccer has become popular, especially among pre hs kids, for generations now, and this has carried over into adulthood.

comparing his (boss/Don Zimmer, it's not clear from the context) to Chiang Kai-shek "racist"?

up
Voting closed 0

No racism whatsoever there. Folks who have no understanding of the context are adding that log to the fire because they automatically assume any reference to a non-white, by Andelman, must somehow be hideous.

During Don Zimmer's tenure as Red Sox manager, Andelman (and his Sports Huddle partners, Mark Witkin and Jim McCarthy) continually came down hard on the skipper. Despite the fond farewells given Zimmer recently, he was reviled by some (including me) when he managed the Sox.

In sporting context, Andelman often spoke truth to power. There was much pressure to NOT constantly berate Zimmer - to stop using his name - so Andelman began referring to Chiang Kai-Shek, a bizarre and ludicrous piece of absurdist "code" that he, his partners and his listeners, all employed during time on-air.

The folks who enjoy badgering Andelman now were probably not alive during his heyday. He was actually considered - again, in sports - a radical; a great friend of the fan and defender of same. What may have transpired since those days may be another story, but dragging his name through the mud for "Chiang Kai-Shek" is bubbleheaded nonsense.

Because you said dragging his name through the mud for the zimmer thing is nonsense, which was only one of four tweets the person was saying were racist, so you are being disingenuous/untruthful when you say people are dragging his name through the mud for 1 racist (or in your world not racist) tweet. Fine , but there are 3 other racist tweets , defend those as well or take back saying people are dragging his name through the mud for this one thing.

Especially, read the LAST sentence of what I said in the longer post. It's very clear.

Defense on one charge does not become invalid just because other charges MAY be true. If you don't understand that, well, you're an idiot.

I'm sure I heard the Chiang Kai-Shek thing when I was a kid, but I guess I forgot about it.

Another one of the supposedly "racist" tweets was a play on the Spanish tendency for Spanish-named athletes to have 4 or 5 names, so he made up a name and stuck Goldberg at the end, a variation of the old Sport Huddle "-and Epstein" gag.

up

Brazil and Argentina are fairly diverse places (Che Guavera had Irish grandparents ...), and some names do end up like that. I've had coworkers and fellow students with such unusual names, owing to the traditions of keeping a mother and a father's surnames attached and picking and choosing family names as first and multiple middle names.

Take the actual name of a person I worked with, a Jew who hailed from Brasil (modified here for ethnic consistency without actually identifying the person): Morton Mauricio Nelson Silverman do Braga.

up
Voting closed 0

Telling an ethnic joke is racist. Unless you're a part of the ethnic group and you're making a self-effacing joke then it obviously isn't. Of course, that wasn't the case 50 years ago when Elder Andelman started in radio, but then again neither were mass-produced electric cars. The world moves on. Please do try to catch up with the rest of us.

For all the hell we give Dan, and all the crap he's written over the years, make no mistake, Dan is completely aware of what he does and who he is, what his job is, and how to go about doing it. He's also still capable of incredible, top notch writing when the urge hits him, rare though that may be. Dan does what he does so we can react to it as we do. Write him an email about one of his columns, and you are still almost certain to get a response, even if only a word or 2. He knows what he's doing, whether we like what he does, or not.

Eddie's just old, hardened, unable to even consider that things can change. He can't conceive that the thoughts, words, and ideas he's spouted for a lifetime may now be out-dated, or that some of them may have been wrong all along.
