Citizen complaint of the day: A new scourge joins Globe Direct in South Boston

South Boston Today on the streets of South Boston

A concerned citizen complains:

"South Boston Today" newspapers litter the streets with trash. They are thrown about throughout the neighborhood. Why are they allowed to put garbage on the street and not be fined?

Throwing trash on the sidewalk is a time honored Southie tradition. It would hard to argue you can put trash in a parking space in Southie but not a newspaper on the sidewalk.

Let me guess: you haven't lived here very long so you like to be witty and condescend to the inferior residents? Hey, I have nieces and nephews living here who grew up in the suburbs and a lot young people that my kids went to college with live here - things change and nothing stays the same forever. But just know that we know exactly what you think. Not all, lots of really nice young people on our street that we have met walking the dog, but try to get off the high horse you are riding on. You chose to live among us peasants.

I think the high-horse goes the other way around when it comes to long-time Southie residents and people who are just moving in.

Hardly.
You don't think saying we all live in public housing and don't work isn't pretty nasty? As well as stupid. I don't lumpmvetybody in together, but some of things I read are pretty vicious.
But people have been trashing us and stereotyping us forever, so it's a joke.

I like getting South Boston Today delivered to my door. My neighbors on the block don't seem to have a problem with it either. Most of them land right on the doorstep just like the NY Times or the WSJ and any other delivery. It's a great source of real neighborhood news, arts, entertainment, sports etc. with 'take no prisoners' editorials. The Globe and the Herald on the other hand, I could do without. The people who seem to be trying to stir up an issue with SBT are the whiney, wannabe cool types who put out the little Caught in Southie blog or whatever it's called. They could stand to chill a bit.

I agree wholeheartedly. South Boston Today puts forth actual news about the goings on in the neighborhood and I appreciate having it delivered to my door. I don't know anyone that cares about the neighborhood that feels any differently.

with 'take no prisoners' editorials

more like old, cranky, outdated dinosaurs. This paper should be called South Boston YESTERDAY!

On a side note, when I take my European GF's poodle for a walk I pick up all this trash and throw it away. Keep SoBo clean and moving forward!

troll on the SoBo Yuppie. Your schtick didn't work on BDC so you went down market?

Care less on what happens in the neighborhood. SBT could care less about you, because you and your college friends are transients and will move out of a Southie after a year or two. See ya !

Right, the "yuppies" buying $600K condos will be moving out of the neighborhood any day now. Keep dreaming. The old Southie that looks back on the resistance to bussing as its finest hour is dying, and good riddance.

As to the editorials, they are an exercise in absurdity, mainly rants regarding the global warming "hoax," the evils of liberalism, dire warnings about the scourge of development, and of course PAAAAAAAARKING. All written with the sophistication of a sixth grader.

The sooner these lunatics are developed out of this neighborhood, the better.

They are the same people who have been ranting since I was a kid. I have been ignoring them for 40 years. Do you think none of us can read a paper, watch the news or form an opinion?

But we're all looking back to busing as our "finest hour".?? Actually, I don't know anybody who is nostalgic for busing, but you wouldn't have any idea how awful those years were, would you? Because you probably grew up in a town where nobody could ever be accused of racism because it was all-white. Meanwhile, because of the actions of a very few, we have been stereotyped our entire lives wherever we go. And you are continuing the tradition.

Busing was nothing more than trying to fix 100 years of inequality on the backs of the have-nots and the have-nots. I didn't go to public school but I had many friends whose high school years were disrupted and miserable and you are just shooting your mouth off about things you know nothing about.

Sorry to disappoint you, but unless everybody decides to cash out - which won't happen - you may just have to rub elbows with us. Chin up.

..as opposed to the classic southie townies who will stay in Southie forever in their subsized public housing while they complain about yuppies who are buying condos paid for with actual jobs.

Are you really under the impression that none of us own property?? Really? You would be mistaken. Thousands of us do.

We all live in "subsidized housing"?? Did they have such a thing in whatever affluent suburb you grew up in?

You can laugh all you want - I have a nice little house that we paid $70,000 for. I could sell it to one of you tomorrow for a small fortune (but I won't) So keep laughing.

And just for the record, I can't stand that paper and the nonsense they write. Your stereotypes are adorable though and if they contribute to your feelings of superiority then good for you. You chose to live among us peasants and I'm sorry to disappoint you that we won't all be leaving. Grow up.

Yeah, mommy and daddy's jobs. Being in the mortgage business, I can assure you the majority of the condo buying Yuppies are borrowing money from their parents. And yes, they will sell the condos after a few years so they can pay mommy and daddy back.
I need to go on record that I don't have a problem with this.

People have been borrowing money from their parents to buy houses for generations now.

Honestly, do you think anybody notices or cares about your poodle? Are poodles supposed to offend us somehow? My sister is on her third. You spend an awful lot of time thinking about people who don't think about you at all

Looks like the SBT editors figured out how to use the internet. I feel bad for anyone who has to rely on SBT for "news."

I need to again grab a bag and walk the block and pick up the old ones that have sat out through the last rainstorms and litter the sidewalk and the several at one place where the residents use the back door and leave the SBT piling up on their front steps. I do that every once in a while to keep the block looking clean. Maybe someone does that on your block too? Think quite a few of the new Southie residents just kick it to the curb off the steps. Others are more considerate and put it in the recycling bins still in the plastic bag.

I wish they would run another coupon for Dunkin Donuts. It was nice to get 99 cents coffee for a month from all the litter. If the date hadn't expired I could have gotten more days of java.

I just wish the person who delivers them, if he/she sees the one from last week still out on the steps or sidewalk could they just collect them? At least on West Broadway I don't see them piling up in the empty storefronts anymore.

I get mine online, but I agree it's a great local paper.

I have to agree with the haters. Once I saw who the publisher and editor were, I knew it was going to be "old school" Southie. That said, and beyond those guys' columns, it wasn't too bad a paper. It gets the news out, covers the whole of the neighborhood, and the articles are more than rehashes of press releases.

do they provide rooftop delivery?

Hardly a new scourge. But where else are we going to get paranoid right-wing crankery that even the Herald won't print? Did you know that illegal immigrants kill 9,000 Americans every year? I bet you didn't!

The same people saying the same thing for forty years. They are a joke and still living in 1974. I have never paid attention to their nonsense

Why? Why? WHINER! God forbid if you have to pick them up yourself.

I'm sorry I'm late to the fray. I see the South Boston bashing has begun. Please continue!

There is a difference between a bag of advertisements and a weekly neighborhood newspaper. Heck, I'd pay the Bulletin (a reasonable amount) if they dropped an issue a week at Waquiot Manor, but instead I have to track an issue down, sometimes unsuccessfully. And before the counter gets made, yes, I do get the Transcript in the mail, but the papers report different things and sometimes the same thing from different angles.

I don't know SBT from anything, and they should be more careful when the deliver, as the photo shows, but come on, it's the weekly paper.

The paper is so poorly put together, and features FAR RIGHT BS, that it really has no value. It certainly doesn't represent South Boston!
