Like Christmas in July in Jamaica Plain

What happens when the fire extinguisher goes off at a gas station

Vera photographed a seeming impossibility this evening: Snow in July - at the Centre Street Gibbs station.

Marc W reports the overhead fire extinguishers went off for some reason at the station (Boston Police report it was just baking soda). He also took a photo:

Always keep a box of baking soda on the counter next to your stove. You never want to throw water on a grease or electrical fire, but baking soda can extinguish it safely. Because it's also non-toxic, whatever was cooking won't necessarily be ruined.

Baking soda is an excellent scouring powder; it will safely clean and polish many things, from stainless steel cookware, to even your teeth. Just a pinch of baking soda will work as an antacid to extinguish a case of heartburn. Oh yes, baking soda can even be used when baking!

It's a very inexpensive product that has many uses around your home. If for no other reason than safety, baking soda should be a staple in everyone's kitchen!

I talked to the Fire Department this morning and they say there wasn't a fire. They're not sure why the extinguishers triggered. Here's an update I posted on my site, Jamaica Plain News: http://bit.ly/1mgZaqa
