REAL Yuppies park in garages. So the poster doesn't make sense.

The community should focus on improving public transportation...most wanna-be-yuppies would ditch their cars then.

Stay classy, Southie.

"Southie" is the same as SoBo, right? I wish people would use the preferred term so everyone can be on the same page when discussing things.

East South End. A few more yoga studios and a pet bakery or two and we'll be there.

And then there's "west-side" East South End and "east-side" East South End. I like it. It clears up alot.

Or East Allston.

who's calling it sobo, aside from clueless real estate agents?

SoBo. There's one wag on this board who likes to drop it routinely (including in his Uhub handle) for trolling purposes.

There is one realtor who is lobbying to get the Lower End renamed to Broadway Village, which just happens to also be the name of their real estate agency.

Nearby, Jerry Foley of J.J. Foley's Cafe is lobbying to get East Berkeley Street renamed to its original name, Dover Street, of which I heartily approve.

Someone post a sign announcing a street fight against the Realtors.

Why someone would want to rename that? :)

This is more about taking away spots from folks who have moved here but still register their cars in New York, New Jersey and CT. This move should (hopefully) make it more difficult for these people to park with out getting ticketed /towed and maybe induce them to register their cars where they live. This program is long over due.

If someone lived in Southie currently, and parked a car that wasn't registered in Southie on the street, they'd be ticketed M-F. How would this make it any different? Do you think they only park their cars on the street on weekends?

I remember when the other day, someone commented, and I paraphrase, "We're not obsessed with Southie...."

Nothing generates comments quicker than any post about Southie.

It's flattering to a degree, I suppose. Anyhow, I'm betting (read: hoping) that this sign was made by a yuppie in an attempt to make Southie people look like idiots. If it was in fact made by a Southie person, you're pathetic. Please move away. You're making us all look bad.

Total townie fantasy. "Rich" Yuppies have their own parking spots. They purchased them at very high prices because they know that on-street parking is first come first serve and a public resource. It might be used for construction crews, move-in permits or one side of the street might be off-limits when you need it due to street cleaning. "Rich" Yuppies know that you don't own a parking spot if you don't actually own it.

While real estate prices have increased dramatically in southie over the last few years, I'd guess the majority of these "rich yuppies" that are living in the area are 22-25 post-grads living with roommates....not the "trust fund babies" people love to call them. Those "rich yuppies" are living in Beacon Hill and Back Bay, not squeezing their new "BMW or Audi" into a spot on L. St.

up
Voting closed 0

you squeeze your new BMW into a spot on K street? What if you pay for it with money you earn at your job and not a trust fund?

up
Voting closed 0

You are not a rich yuppie if you're squeezing your 3 series bmw into a street spot.

what happens when this tough townie sees someone in the park around 6pm and beats him up, even though its a random person? idiot

comma splice!!!

up

sell Ma & Pa's three family for $1miil do you argue with the yuppie about parking at the closing or just beat him after?

up

Since this is a threat to inflict bodily harm, why don't police go to the park today at 6pm and have a word with Boston's toughest townies

This should get people's attention and make for a good turnout.

I once tried to get more people to come out to a meeting with the promise that I would fight the chair of the meeting at the end. There were no pressing issues, and I liked the chair, but I wanted people to show up. It didn't work.

up

Well, did you just leave it at fight or was it fight with lead pipes? You need to be provocative with these things.

If the issue was pushed, I was thinking thumb wrestling to determine the victor.

It's kind of like that episode of Newhart where there was a promise to "see" the car from Knight Rider. Or the episode of South Park "free hat" which did involve one free hat and the psychopath Hat McCullough.

All the Yuppies should move to Dorchester. They don't have resident parking either:

And nice parts of Dot, too. Guess what, I've lived in really bad parts of Dot and the good parts. With the qualifier being potential for violent crime.

Damn right I told my peeps if they were basically cruising into the suburbs (good parts) or rolling into the hood (worse parts.)

What of it?

I would imagine this is over trying to get the point branded as its own neighborhood with separate parking stickers. The point is generally speaking decently high value land with a lower population density than much of the rest of southie, so I imagine the flyer is against that, as it would benefit the "rich y's" who live at the point while reducing overall southie parking spots. Honestly they need to tear down the old colony projects and build a commercial area with some municipal garages, 2 birds with one stone.

I have a veryyyyyy big feeling I know the guy who wrote this notice.... this very angry old man on the 9 bus last week made a huge tizzy that no one was getting up for him when he was yelling he had a disability card (I for one was already standing, so I agree it was messed up no one got up for him) but then he went on and on about that issue along with yuppies in Southie, parking, etc. and that he was banding everyone he knew together to take these people down! He seemed pretty adamant! No name unfortunately but he was probably late 50s/early 60s and rode a bicycle. He also called the girls sitting around him "a bunch of yuppie sluts" and said, "he felt bad for all their boyfriends." I for one found this extremely entertaining, and same goes to this sign!

Although it was a few months ago, unfortunately, for me, I had an encounter with him where I was the "girl who wasn't giving up my seat". It's actually insane that I was his target because there has never been a time where I saw someone who was 1) elderly 2) with small children 3) with a visible disability or 4) pregnant that I didn't offer my seat too. However, on this day, I had my headphones on and he got on with another younger guy. He did not appear handicapped in anyway or elderly. I know not all handicapped people have visible disabilities, but there is no way for me to know that unless you speak up or I poll everyone on the bus to make sure no one needs to sit. So anyway, I'm minding my own business when I get the sense that he's trying to get my attention. I pull out my earphones and he says "Do you want to see my card?" Obviously I have no idea what he's talking about and I stare at him quizzically. He then proceeds to pull out his disability card and shove it in my face and call me a dumb yuppie bitch. He then starts talking loudly to his friend about how all these yuppies have no respect. All I kept thinking was that this entire situation could have been handled and resolved much differently had he just had enough "respect" to tap me on the shoulder and say, excuse me, I have a disability, could I please have your seat? I would have said, "sure" and he would have been sitting.

I have lived in Southie 10 years. I love this neighborhood. I'm not from here, but it's where my home is. I have great neighbors, yuppies and locals. What I hate are the assumptions from both sides. Oh, I'm not from here, I must be a rich, entitled douchebag who doesn't care about the community. Oh, you're from here, you must be a racist, ignorant prick. Have I met those people? Yes. Are most people like that? Nope, they're not. Stop perpetuating the stereotypes. That's what's ruining the neighborhood. All of us fighting each other over things that we probably can agree on, if we weren't so quick to be on the defense.

This flyer has to be purposely ridiculous right? This must be satirical (at least I hope so). I don't even understand what side they're taking. No yuppie would want 7 day a week resident only parking. It seems as though all parties are on the same side here. Not to mention that the animosity between yuppies and long time residents doesn't exist nearly to the extent that people like to play it up to be. The old mantra of yuppies being disrespectful and not conforming to some sort of glorified revisionist history of Southie is such a load of crap. In reality that's not the case. I've lived there for 5 years, know many born and bred Southie people (including my neighbors GASP!) and there's no issues. If Southie lifers have a problem with young, all white (and yes this is definitely relevant) people with jobs who pay high rents to local landlords, commit zero crimes and contribute mightily to local businesses well then they're just idiots.

That there's an irrational dislike for yuppies for no real reason other than that they didn't grow up in Southie.

Where do I send family and friends to park on the weekends when they come to visit my wife, kids, and I? Do I send them to visitors parking on Day Blvd that will undoubtedly be fully now that no one visiting can park in from of their family's house? There are always plenty of spots during the day on weekends on my street. It seems to me that those complaining can only not find spots near their house on weekend nights. To that I say, it's a city. Park a few blocks over where you find a spot and walk. Or ask our "wise representatives" to open up all the angled parking by the beaches and utilize school and library parking lots for overnight parking.

It doesn't make sense to inconvenience the majority of folks who have family and friends visit them in Southie on the weekends for easy access to beaches, downtown, Fenway, etc. to accommodate the small majority who complain they can't park right in front of their house.

It must be so sad having grown up in far away states with lower standards of living, education rates, and boring characterless towns and suburbs without history, that transplants need to get their thrills by bashing a neighborhood. The whole thing reeks of envy and self-consciousness.

Remember, you came here to make a living, because the people in your own state didn't produce a nice enough society and economy as the people did in this state. The article in the paper the other day showed MA is tops in education and other measures. Never lived in Southie, but there's a lot of nice things about this area.

up
Voting closed 0

I don't think your getting the point here. This note is irrational. No one said southerners with high expectations of kindness are flocking to southie to take jobs in Boston... I would assume these "yups" grew up in MA anyways...

up
Voting closed 0

People come to this are all the time for better jobs because they couldn't find them in their own state, but they still feel the need to bash locals for who knows what reason.

up
Voting closed 0

that the sign is locals bashing (potentially physically) yuppies, not the other way around, no? For the most part I think the yuppies are happy enough to just go about their yuppie lives and don't really give much thought to the locals

up

most of the yuppies I know are from the Boston suburbs origonally

up

Pretty sure that the creator of that poster and the folks he wants to turn out to fight yuppies had nothing to do with creating a nice society and economy in the Boston area.

Show them what happens when people with money run away and take the jobs with them.

I doubt they would make the appropriate mental leaps, though.

When I read things like this I automatically think of a townie type guy at my gym who shout talks and wears wife beater shirts and SO stereotypical it hurts.

What will happen when all the yuppies who can't afford $1000000+ LEED-certified shitboxes in Southie show up en masse in Roxbury and Eastie? Will they be just as smug and condescending, or would it be more like "my heart bleeds for the displaced, but I need a place to live?"

In hyde park no one gets all bent out of shape like this. we occasionally shoot one another but at least we dont stress about little things.

So it's past 8pm now. Did the tough guy bash in some yuppie heads or what? Was it the usual 1 hitter quiter townie to yuppie beat down? Didn't think so.

Whats a yuppie? Who's a townie? Hmmm. zzzz.

BUILD SOME PARKING STRUCTURES! How much residential development can you possibly stuff into a small town before a large capacity garage is 100% necessary to relieve parking pressure?

up
Voting closed 0

For eminent domain?

How about this: mark and number spots on the road. $2000 per year gets you your own numbered spot, with priority to spots in front of your house. No more permits issued than spots exist.

up
Voting closed 0

you're being sarcastic because your solution blows. Eminent domain has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm suggesting. There are plenty (though fewer and fewer each month) of locations along 1st Street that would be perfect for a multi-level parking garage. New residential buildings must provide at most 1 off-street spot per unit; that is as foolish a requirement now as it was when it was first instituted and is directly related to the issue(s) at hand.
