West Broadway bar owners seek to cash in on apartment craze

Boston Magazine reports the owners of the Cornerstone Bar, across from the Broadway T stop, have submitted a letter to the BRA that they want to tear the place down and replace it with apartments, offices and a restaurant.

The Yuppies ruin everything!

This development would never have been proposed if the yuppies would just talk to their neighbors! We'd better slash some tires to get the point across before it's too late!

Those damn yuppies building an apartment complex in place of the family-owned bar they have been operating for 20+ years, it's so like them isn't it

What did your arrival ruin (other than your mother's life)?

Also, please explain how things are "ruined" by those who are coming in, rather than those who sold their properties and moved out?

Pretty sure the first comment was sarcastic.

It was. I wrote it.
I don't hate yuppies and I also don't hate anybody who has lived here forever who decides to cash out. I wish I had a great piece if real estate to sell.

At all.

The first time I visited S. Boston in around 2001, I got off at the W. Broadway T stop. There were no condos there, just a covered bench, which a man was sleeping under in a puddle of (I assume his own) urine. A bottle in a kitchy brown paper bag was there at his finger tips. Which neighborhood is it that's supposed to have been ruined?

There are still plenty of homeless as there has been in Southie for years because of the proximity of the Pine St Inn, even when it actually was on Pine St. Many of the comments you read here about Southie are just people trying to get a rise so just ignore them. I've wondered what took the Cornerstone so long.. next Triple O's

Please, Heather - for our sake and your own...just leave Southie since you hate being here so much. Your act is getting old....

..it was 1962. It was a place called Blinstrubs and I had no idea what South Boston was.

My mother was friends of the Kingston Trio and I ate their dressing room Saltines after their performance.

I remember a lively bustling place. The decline from flight to suburbs hadn't hit.

Xenophobia was unknown and the demagogues who made it look bad were still mere sprats.

The grotesque mediocrity of young urban professionals was far, far away in time.

But it seems like only yesterday.

I didn't realize that the Cornerstone was owned or operated by "The Yuppies" . I thought their name was "Flaherty"

But what about parking! Can we please think of the cars!

At least it will be mixed-use. They could just reopen their bar in the restaurant space if they are so inclined.

Seems like a net positive, to me.

Great spot for apartments, and good use of space. Nice addition to the neighborhood.

There is nothing mixed about mixed use housing. It only markets to two groups, the rich and the poor. The middle class keep getting F'd. To poor to buy, not poor enough to qualify.

up

Mixed use = retail, housing, and office space.

up

Easy mistake I'd say. Swirly are you invested here? You seem to be rather jumpy on this subject. And particularly insulting to all anons.

Just stupid reactionary ones.

up

If you care about development and care about what happens in your community, the phrase "mixed use" is very different from "mixed income." In the case of the latter, the word "income" is used. Use of land or properties is a very different concept.

I was talking today with someone who thinks the U.S. is launching air strikes against the Iraqi government. They are launching air strikes and it is against an armed force in Iraq, but there is a certain ignorance in thinking that it is against the government. If you are going to make a point in a discussion, at least know what you are talking about.

Can't say this is entirely unexpected. Transit-oriented development is what this town needs more of, not more parking spaces.

The building was built in 1939. Not old by Boston standards, but it could probably use an update of plumbing/electric. It will be interesting to see if they keep the brick exterior, gut it, but build on top of it.

I wouldn't buy there unless it came with 2 deeded parking spots for my SUV and car.

up
Voting closed 0

70 parking spaces for 47 units across from a T station - what part of that is TOD?

up
Voting closed 0

Just putting an apartment building across the street from a train station makes it pretty transit oriented by default, regardless of what the building does to accommodate cars. And how ample it is depends on how much the non-residential usage might compete for parking space as well.

But there was a Transit Cafe there already...........

Broadway Village in SoBo is a great place to live!

But if this is going to be run by townies and not proper yupster management...the apt will be a dump and so will the restaurant/bar.

Let them tear down the structure and rebuild, if it was my property or any of these naysayers property they would have the same mindset of this property owner! Boston needs a facelift, and this property owner is doing right for neighborhood, his land/ building he can tear it down and rebuild by law.. Remember folks in 2007 law was passed- Mass law protected under " Chapter 40b"

Hey, silly SoBo Yuppie, are you STILL trying? By this time, anyone but a mindless goon would have moved on when they realized that all are wise to your childlike baiting of locals. Um, you do realize it don't you? You couldn't possibly be that dense - could you?

I was born and raised in South Boston. I got the hell out of there 10 years ago, not because of 'The Yuppies' moving in, but because of the way 'outsiders' were treated by my fellow local South Boston residents (including my own family members). People have a right to live wherever the hell they want. Shame on the person who says someone else can't live in a certain town! For crying out loud, we stole this land from Native Americans. No one owns southie, if someone wants to move there, whether it's for a year, or 20 years, they have every right to do so and shouldn't have to put up with the crap that my fellow locals throw at them.

And by the way, I've been to the cornerstone, it's a dump, and if the owner wants to tear it down and rebuild, then let him.

Yup, you're the majority. You're the majority of the fools who hang down M Street beach. You're the majority, so when the snow flies and all the parking space savers come out let's blame the newbies, you're the majority of fools who wait in long lines.outside the Beer Garden, Stats, Stephs and the Lincoln. Looks like you make up the majority of fools in Southie. Yes you are the majority.
