Olympics backers claim no new public money needed

The Globe reports:

The IOC wants host cities to provide a financial guarantee, a requirement that has troubled US bidders in the past. Boston 2024 executive vice president Erin Murphy said in a statement that the local organizing committee would indemnify the city against possible losses.

"We'll make sure you get your money BACK" is not "we don't need any public funds"!

Also, our money still has to go to paying for all the extra municipal labor from trash collectors to city planners. Our money has still has to go to paying for all the extra fixer-upper-ing the city does. And we as local residents lose out because everyone's spending time prepping for the Olympics instead of doing stuff to improve the city (lost opportunity cost.)

NO OLYMPICS IN BOSTON (and no anarchist groups, thank you very much)

This is what every turnpike air rights developer says - right before they come back and say they need public funds. Fortunately so far - not mid way through a project.

Well, what city would that be? Surely they don't mean ALL the CITIES that would be effed over by this mess, no.

So the Boston Globe has an article today with a bunch of graphs. They claim the backers of the Olympics in Boston think the colleges will pay $13 Billion (!) for transportation improvements.

So the city can't get schools to make the full contributions equal to their tax exempt status but somehow the schools will have no problem ponying up billions for improvements to public transportation that wouldn't even help most of their students?

They also claim the Feds will pick up the $1-2 Billion needed for security. The transportation trust fund is broke but sure, why not spend this much cash to make people feel safe for a few weeks.

$13 billion? That's such a staggeringly ridiculous amount to expect local colleges, even Harvard, to kick in just for the T, it's gotta be a typo, right?

Thanks for noting that chart - I somehow missed it.

with additional money for temporary venues coming from the Olympic operating budget

Seriously, read the whole thing before reporting misinformation.

what the CLF and the courts couldn't do?!?

But but but you know how this state works roadman...

Fake promises of income and a large project (being supported by big construction lobby) that is being jammed down our throats without any public approval always seems to make things happen. Far more than our courts or the CFL could ever do.

does not match the one in the print edition nor the information in the story. The 13 Billion number comes from improvements already approved by the legislature for pubic transport. The colleges contribute by upgrading their facilities.

This doesn't mean Boston's hosting isn't a bad idea, just not as bad as the online graph indicates.

Big Dig. Then you know Fish and his cadre of elitist vampires are lying.

Fish et al are going to thrown down a couple billion of their own money and then make a killing how exactly? Teach me your logic. This has got to be the greatest scam of all time seeing as it's entirely impossible.

They think we are all fools! The colleges pay nothing in these local cities and towns and do zero for the public. Now we are expected to believe this BS.

I gotta bridge over the Charles to sell ya - cheap!

Fix the T first. Build all the lines it is supposed to have and repair the cars and services and THEN WE CAN START TALKING ABOUT AN OLYMPICS.

IF THE PROPONENTS REALLY BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAY THEY BELIEVE THAT NO PUBLIC $ IS NEEDED. WHY DON'T THAY PROPOSE LEGISLATION, AS WAS DONE IN LA, TO RESTRICT THE USE OF PUBLIC MONEY? MR FISH & HIS PALS ARE LOOKING FOR A WINDFALL

People with these blood, sweat and tears elucidations of great alacrity and logic---

But its moot...

Dealing with bodies like the IOC and the Feds and creating an expectation within your self that any goings on will be governed with proper reason or logic is tragic flaw, in that it wont end good for you (the protagonist.).
