A little pre-Thanksgiving repast in the West End

Hawk on Staniford

Neil the roving UHub photographer spotted this hawk with a dead squirrel behind 50 Staniford St. this morning (doesn't appear to be one of the West End's fabled white squirrels). He reports:

Has a dead squirrel. Sat on ground for a while then flew off with prey. Squirrel got caught on fence and bird landed on statue's head.

I actually saw one of the Albino squirrels between Staniford and Blossom Streets yesterday. It was adorable too! The squirrels in that neighborhood seemed to be pretty tame, which unfortunately, probably makes them easy pickings for birds of prey.

Hawks have occasionally used the fire escape outside of my third-floor apartment as a convenient spot to enjoy their repast. I know this because they are not the type of guests to clean up afterwards, had evidence of a visit just a few days ago. In my neighborhood rodents seem to be the meal of choice. Not pleasant, but sometimes have a hawk just perching on the railing enjoying the view, which is awesome.

Looks like a Peregrine Falcon.

You'd never see a Peregrine Falcon eating a squirrel on a sidewalk. They eat birds which they catch in the air and take to an elevated perch to consume.

This is a Red-tailed Hawk. That's the most abundant hawk around here by a huge margin and the only one you're likely to see on the ground. This one's an immature - you can tell because it has a faintly barred tail that isn't red; only adults have red tails.
