$2 million bail for teen charged with sexual assaults, armed holdups in Fields Corner and on the Red Line

A 16-year-old already facing armed robbery and kidnapping charges for two incidents on Jan. 13 was arraigned yesterday on new charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and indecent assault and battery for incidents on Jan. 11 and 13, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The teen, not named because of his age, had his bail increased from $1 million to $2 million due to the new charges, the DA's office reports. Although he gave his last address as a school in Lancaster, he has family in Dorchester.

The DA's office described the four incidents:

Around 10 p.m. on Jan. 11, he robbed another teen of his phone at the Fields Corner Red Line station.

Around midnight on Jan. 13, he followed a woman from Fields Corner to Neponset Avenue, then:

Stuck what she believed to be a gun in her back, and ordered him to return with him to Fields Corner. The woman escaped by suggesting they walk along Gibson Street - which she knew was home to the Boston Police C-11 district station. She bolted away from him, ran into the station.

Undeterred by his close encounter with police, around 12:25 a.m., he hopped on the Red Line, then

Allegedly grasped a handgun-like object in his jacket pocket, demanded a woman’s iPhone while riding the Red Line inbound between Savin Hill and Andrew stations, then tried unsuccessfully to drag her off the train.

About 20 minutes after that, the DA's office reports:

The juvenile allegedly assaulted an adult female at Fields Corner, put what she believed to be a gun to her back, and brought her to a nearby location where he sexually assaulted her and took her purse, containing an iPhone and identification cards.

All of his victims were able to give police detailed descriptions, down to the red and white bandana he carried or wore in the Jan. 13 attacks. According to the DA's office:

All of his victims were able to give police detailed descriptions, down to the red and white bandana he carried or wore in the Jan. 13 attacks. Transit Police were able to pull up images of him from surveillance cameras around Fields Corner. When they heard Boston Police were investigating new attacks two days later, they shared their information.

Just a few hours after the last attack on Jan. 13, Transit Police observed footage of the juvenile, wearing clothing consistent with the unknown assailant, at Fields Corner. Transit Police immediately responded to the area and ordered all trains held at the station. The juvenile was not on scene when the first officers arrived, but they soon located him at a nearby McDonalds on Dorchester Avenue.

The officers recovered a replica handgun from the juvenile’s waistband. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, a black vest, red-and-black sneakers, and a pair of red pants underneath a pair of black pants. In his possession were a bandanna, a bank card and iPhone belonging to the sexual assault victim, and another iPhone belonging to the woman robbed on the Red Line train.

Innocent, etc.

Pretty sad that a kid this age could be such a one-man crime wave.

the question "Can he be charged as an adult?" And the standard "not named because of his age" cop-out line (no pun intended) is such BS I don't know where to begin.

When we decide that 16 year olds are adults in other aspects - such as voting, beer, marriage, and signing contracts for military service - we can consider them adults in this, too.

Want to change that? Call your state senator and state representative and ask them to lower the age of majority.

...doesn't hold up. The drinking age in most (all?) states is 21, yet at the age of 18 a young man or woman can enlist in the military (but most take the easy way out and go to college). So an 18 year old can sign their life over and serve their country, but can't legally have a few beers for several years after that. So, a 16 year old who commits a disgusting and heinous crime can certainly stand trial as an adult.

...and the military draft age is how the drinking age got lowered to 18, once upon a time. Don't try the "it's always been this way" argument here, because it's just plain not true, and don't be so confident it won't change again.

And where did I say "it's always been this way"? You must have replies to me thinking you were replying to someone else.

We consider criminal suspects as just that - criminal suspects, and treat them as such regardless of their age. In other words, equal justice for all.

But that would mean that people would have to actually take responsibility for their actions.

Sadly , he will be out doing the same thing in 18months at a juvenile program.... crimes like that need to be charge as a grown man knowing well what he is doing

Nice job all around by the police and the court system, what stations are the safest in the system the news is reporting a stabbing at Wilmington station and a friend of mine who works at New England Medical told me a wheelchair patient was robbed at the orange line stop.

He should be charged as a adult and be named.

How much of a danger to society is this kid to be held on $2 million bail? I mean, is $500,000 too low?

Why not just hold him without bail if he is a danger? I'm not even being sarcastic. The ADA actually convinced the judge that any bail below $2 million would not be acceptable.

Yup, I'm glad he's off the streets.
