Hyde Park Avenue into Forest Hills remains a nightmare

Seems people are continuing to park across from the train station, even though the city never cleared the road to the curb, narrowing the road to one lane and creating backups that now extend down to Roslindale.

The Clumsy Jeweler reported around 9 a.m. on her efforts to get a bus to the train station this morning:

5 full 32's passed since 7:45. Finally got on one. Driver says it will be an hour to Forest Hills.

Karen Kast-McBride reports it took her 40 minutes to get from American Legion Highway in Roslindale to Hyde Park Avenue on Walk Hill Street this morning.

So the city should tow cars illegally parked in the street. This would clear the street for easier commute for 100s+.

no... my car is legally parked on Hyde park ave with no communication about when and where to park. Such an idiotic solution to a bigger problem with Hyde Park Ave! Just wait until the overpass comes down and you're all stuck in worse traffic.

The city needs to clear out all the snow to the curb AND ban parking on HP Ave in Forest Hills. What a mess.

This:

The city needs to clear out all the snow to the curb AND ban parking on HP Ave in Forest Hills. What a mess.

is something that needs to be done everywhere, including Cambridge and Somerville, imho.

they need to give us some direction-only about ten percent of Weld Hill is plowed out... signed about snow removal went up with no dates. Can I come park at your house?

If your tire isnt 6 inches from the curb, your ass needs to be towed to New Hampshire

Point of information: In Massachusetts, the law is 12 inches.

focus on the assholes who walk and double park. Why are you so obsessed with towing Legally parked Jp residents.

Why are you worrying about towing if you are legally parked?

HPA always slows way down where there is snow.

It boggles the mind, however, why the city isn't towing those cars.

this is why the City needs its own snow eater...

But there is a snow farm nearby! Franklin Park Zoo, by the Franklin Park golf course...
Why are they NOT moving the snow from HPA to Franklin Park? That snow farm DOES have an industrial snow-melting machine.

It took until this past Sunday for the city to even begin removing some snow from major intersections along Hyde Park Ave after the big storm. At that rate, it will be next Monday before they clear the big piles from the corners. And they'll clear curb-to-curb, oh, approximately never.

It doesn't make sense to me why the city didn't / doesn't plow streets like this to the curb during the declared Snow Emergency. But they didn't / don't.

It does take more time to do a good job curb to curb. This means that we could be in snow emergency mode for weeks after a big storm. The alternative is to just push it all onto the sidewalk, and I would be pissed to no end if that was the option the city took.

I'm annoyed, but patient. But patience runs thin.

River Street in Hyde Park is, surprisingly, cleared curb-to-curb, allowing people to both park and drive on the street simultaneously.

(This refers to the section between roughly Reservation Road and Wood Ave, I didn't go the whole length.)

Family which depends on the #32 on Hyde Park Ave have given up at least 3 days in the last week. Unable to get on a bus that was packed by the time it reached them, so the bus would not stop to let others on. This is just over one statute mile from the station. They took personal time. And that's running out fast.

The solution is for the T to send a bus as far as American Leg Highway at Hyde Park Ave (near Met Ave) and pick those people up on a short special run.

There have been times when the starter at Forest Hills has sent a single bus up Washington St at afternoon rush just to Roslindale Sq to alleviate crowds going only that far. I have been fortunate to catch that a couple of times. I believe on one occasion the bus was actually a #14 that was starting its run at Roslindale Sq, so when it got there it changed its sign and went on its way. Ther eare a few "dead head" bus runs that leave Forest Hills with a "Not In Service" sign showing that go elsewhere to start their service runs. Those could be used in this emergency to move people.

This is the new normal people. Once the construction starts it will remain like this for a long time - years. This traffic back up which is due to the snow, was the same when the current Forest Hills Station and current roadways were built back in the mid-80s, and which at the time was touted as the best solution.

And of course, the "public transit" option will be stuck in this traffic back up along with everyone else. Bicycles only work for the younger and firmer set, and even they will face risk in traffic congested streets.

Look, having a record snowfall in a single week is a bit much, and compared to my fuzzy memories (7 years old in 1978) we are doing a better job getting around, but still, this version of reality cannot stand.

Out in the great vote farm of the southwest, simply put the snow has to go from Washington Street, Hyde Park Ave, Cummings Highway, Belgrade Ave, Centre Street, and maybe Spring Street (I haven't made it out that far yet.) And yes, there are other parts of the city where similar claims can be made.

This is what the administration should be judged on, with the grain of salt that it was 40 inches in a week.

If the next 12" by Tuesday materializes (and I saw one suggestion that it'll be closer to 18", but I closed my eyes and went LALALALALA), it would be just grand if at least some of the existing inundation had been transported elsewhere.

Don't want to be rude, I just don't want to read about more snow. I think that's something we can all agree upon. And that's why I never mention when we've gone a while into the season without any snow.

the great vote farm of the southwest

A turn of phrase I may have to borrow in the future.

Maybe RVMS can do some advocacy for this??

... remember that the demise of the Casey Overpass is promised to only "IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW"... Maybe what they really mean is "IMPROVE TRAFFIC SO MORE BACKUPS HAVE LESS FLOW". I can't wait till 30,000 more cars transit the surface streets with all the gracious people double parking. Sometimes I think the whole Forest Hills plan is a diabolical scheme to create a great mind experiment to see just how far people can be pushed with frustration before a war zone erupts... Yesterday a guy in a car with a Pennsylvania license plate blocked the entrance to the parking lot across from Forest Hills and when I tried to get his attention to move, he pretended he didn't see me. I don't think it will be long before the police are being called to deal with fists and collisions due to the arrogance and ignorance of our great unwashed masses and arrogant behaviors.

No.

This is a different circumstance. My issue will be the backups when there is no snow on the ground, though I suppose that the gridlock is only in 2 of the 4 directions possible right now as opposed to all around. Of course, if the surface roadway is cleared as well as Morton Street (up to American Legion) and the Arborway are, it would be a wash in the winter.

Of course, the snow will end up on the bike lanes (check out the rest of the city, people), but I'm not going to touch that.

I take the 32 from Wolcott to Forest Hills - the last few days we've been completely full at Cleary Square, though it does clear up slightly on the approach to Walk Hill as people are figuring out it's faster to walk. In good weather, the bus ride usually takes 20-25 minutes, yesterday was 1 hr 20 minutes, today was just over an hour. The bus driver today bailed Hyde Park Ave at Ukraine and coasted right into the upper busway.

Yeah, between the cancelled Fairmount trains and traffic on the 32, Readville commuters have really been rolling the dice the past few days.
