Dog that ran across Quincy Bay found safe in Dorchester

Taupaw

Taupaw the Dutch Wolfhound, who startled a Coast Guard cutter crew when he ran in front of them on the ice in Quincy Bay, turned up at a construction site in Dorchester yesterday, according to Missing Dogs Massachusetts, which reports Boston Animal Control, which spotted, picked him up and reunited him with his Jamaica Plain owner.

Over at Jamaica Plain News, we talked to the owner about the blessed reunion. He said Animal Control spotted the dog and called him, but Taupaw is so wary of humans that the beast would only come to him.

If you see the full size photo you'll see the dog is good at both meanings of Hot Licks.

That is one cool hound.

Saarloosen are such a cool breed. They are actually wolfdogs that, due to many many generations of cross breeding, have received designation beyond the hybrid classification and restriction. They're timid, independent and $$$$$$$$$$ but very cool.

Do they make GPS-enabled dog collars yet?

My brother has a dog that likes to escape when it finds the opportunity. So I went looking for a product that would help him. The problem isn't GPS-enabling the collar. It's how you communicate with it to know where the animal is. Either you have to basically install an entire cell phone into the collar and pay a monthly fee for it to phone home all the time with its current location that you can then track by app on your own phone/computer OR you have to be close enough to establish a Bluetooth connection with the collar which means once the dog gets a few hundred feet away, you've lost him just the same as if you didn't have the collar.

They make a Lo-Jack style collar that works on pinging radio signals and is a bit like playing "hot/cold" as you try to locate the source of the pings but even that requires you to be close enough to hear the pings and it's a low-power transmitter since it has to fit in the collar.

The other thing all three of these options suffer from is battery life. So you end up constantly taking the collar off to charge it and needing to remember to put it back on before going outside at all, so a dog that bolts from home and keeps running isn't going to be trackable anyways because you wouldn't have had their tracking collar on all the time.

It's an interest gap in technology that you'd think has a solution but one that isn't apparent yet.
