Convicted drunk driver charged with plowing into a woman crossing the street in South Boston

A South Boston man with one OUI conviction under his belt and facing charges for another alleged OUI incident was ordered held without bail after he allegedly hit a woman walking across Day Boulevard yesterday evening - sending her 15 feet into the air - and then just driving off, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

William Davis Watson, 37, of South Boston, was stopped by a state trooper as he tried to get on I-93 after hitting the woman, 60, near the State Police barracks around 7:50 p.m., according to the DA's office. He was arraigned today in South Boston Municipal Court on charges of charges of operating with a suspended license and leaving the scene of a collision causing injury.

A motorist who had witnessed the incident followed the suspect vehicle, spotted a trooper’s cruiser, and began leaning on her horn to get his attention. When the trooper approached her car, she pointed out the suspect vehicle and said it had just hit a pedestrian and "took off."

The trooper began pursuit of the red Toyota sedan, which had by this time passed the cruiser, and stopped it in the area of the onramp to I-93 northbound. Watson was alone in the vehicle. When the trooper asked if he had hit a pedestrian, he allegedly stated, "I think so."

Prosecutors say the woman suffered head and hip injuries, but is expected to survive.

At the time of his arrest, Watson was on probation for operating under the influence of liquor as a first offense out of Lynn District Court and was in default for operating under the influence of liquor and operating with a suspended license out of Dorchester Municipal Court.

It's not clear why the good samaritan didn't just call 911 (no phone?) but regardless she deserves honors for following the drunk and getting the police.

As for the guy, he deserves to rot in jail forever.

I don't mess with phones while driving for the same reason I don't drive drunk.

Good job tipping the cops to a serious hazard without being one herself.

...if the pedestrian was hit on Day Blvd near the State police barracks and the Trooper pulled him over by the on ramp to 93N; then those two locations are essentially on opposite sides of the same rotary. Even if he hit her a little further down Day Blvd it'd still just be hundreds of feet. And since the barracks are right there the witness probably saw a trooper before she could even pull her phone out.
But way to find fault with the witness!!!!

...just like in Cambridge.

Drivers are out of control around here.

But I don't think that would stop a drunk driver.

but it would make things safer for the elderly, kids and people in wheelchairs.

There is an elderly man on my street in a wheel chair and it is scary to see cars flying by as he approaches the intersection.

I do agree with you. My point was that I don't believe this situation is the best argument to help make the raised crosswalks happen.

We are now treating substance abuse as an illness not a crime. Driving around drunk is just one of those symptoms of his illness. The poor man hasn't been getting the medical treatment he needs to prevent unfortunate side effects. Remember, HE is a victim of an illness.

Over-reliance on cars is a sickness.

Addiction is an illness.

The things you do while under the influence are crimes.

It's not rocket surgery.

If that's the case but your "crime" while under the influence is a one night stand then is dealing with the awkwardness in the morning your punishment?

Or it could be the chlamydia.

How about her immigration status or where her parents are? Or if any "confusing" traffic islands were installed recently, or changes to streets that confuse your drunk town buddies?

Your advocacy of your drunken peers and friends and their horrible driving is slipping.

but I would think some part of this would have lead to some jail time in a society that takes drunk driving seriously.

Driver? Not so much.

Remember, folks: if you want to kill somebody in Massachusetts, do it with a car or a truck! Instant excuse-making will be available from prosecutors and cops!

prosecutors and cops are the 4th and 5th group(s) to blame.

its not about leaning his lesson! Have you not had your liberal Kool Aid to drink? Addicts are the victims here and he can't help himself. He needs taxpayer funded government detox and rehab to cure him!
