Maria Stephanos returns - on Channel 5, not the NBC Channel 7 killer

WCVB announced today that Maria Stephanos will start co-anchoring its 11 p.m. and new 7 p.m. newscasts with, of course, Ed Harding, on Thursday.

Heather Unruh will continue to co-anchoring the 4:30 p.m. newscast with, of course, Ed Harding, as well as the 6 p.m newscast and will start doing medical reporting.

The news puts an end to the speculation that Stephanos, late of Channel 25, would join Pete Bouchard at NBC's attempt to crush Channel 7.

I understand a lot of people like her, I find her a goofball, with an irritating, simpering manner.

Eddie Obvious. I think his diarrhea of the mouth has finally got Harvey wanting to tell him to stfu.

I hate to be mean but I don't see the fit. She's flashy and sassy - very Fox 25. 'CVB is more of an old timey kind of news family. Ya know, Nana's favorite station - and I mean that in a good way, a very good way. 7 News is way more up her alley. I hope CH5 asks her to up the journalistic professionalism and tone down the hyperbole and I say that with no disrespect intended. She was perfect for Fox 25 but CVB is has always has been (or at least tried to remain) a different, softer, gentler animal. I'm not saying better - just slightly more resistant to the Sunbeaming of local news - and good or bad, at least it's a different tone in a noisy 24 hr news cycle with so many outlets SHOUTING for attention..

Maria S, will also anchor the 10 pm newscast on METV, channel 5.2, beginning Feb 29. There is no mention of who the 10 pm co-anchor will be on the WCVB website, but one can assume...

They aren't in standard TV listings and don't seem to be promoted anywhere, which makes me wonder how anyone finds their programming.

As far as I know, all of the subchannels for the Boston stations are on cable. However, you are correct in implying they would be hard for non-nerds to find.

For those of us who don't have cable and watch TV via antenna, they're easy to find. Right after 5.1 is 5.2. My kids actually like the retro shows better than most current TV shows.

I have all the "obscure" channels via antenna.

You mean there's still an 11:00pm news?

I don't see what people like about this woman. She's got an unappealing sort of "crude edge" to her, which seems to be a thing with news anchors now in some quarters. TV news continues it's long decline.

Looks like I'm watching 4. Can't take the childish laughter from her

Bianca DelaGarza was very "Fox TV" when she went to Ch 5 and it took months for that to be bred out of her, then she left for that syndicated show she does. Neither is a loss to the local TV audience. Flighty fluff.

The problem with TV news these days (as in running off at the mouth) is that too much personal editorializing is allowed.

Read the news. Period.

If I want to be inflamed and morally outraged about it I can make up my own mind thank you. I don't need the anchors bantering about it to help me understand whether it was good or bad.

Stephanos... Honey, do you need to wear those boots always?

Local news seems to have trouble having their news readers actually be able to say the words. I'm tired of them fumbling over what's in front of them. It's clear they don't pre-read stories to know what the story is about. (When I studied broadcast journalism, we PRACTICED the stories before air.) And there's too much ad libbing. I can't watch WBZ in the morning because the two of them stumble too much.

That's the reason most of us are beyond fed up with Ed Harding and his constant banter and editorializing. But it gets the ratings. People want entertainment, not news; and they want best friends, not news anchors.

out loud he will say "and Harv people really think this Harding is a real dick".

Complaining about newscasters? Really? Talk about first world problems. I happen to like Maria S., because she's easy on the eyes. If that makes me a bad perso then oh well. The only news guy I've ever truly disliked was that VB character who use to be on Fox.

By bantering, making faces, gossiping, they're attempting to appeal to their desired demographic.
