Man shot at twice in Roslindale robbery attempt

Police are scouring the area from the Stop & Shop parking lot on American Legion Highway to Hyde Park Avenue and Canterbury Street for three men who apparently fired two rounds at a man they were trying to rob at the Stop & Shop parking lot around 12:50 p.m.

The man was resting in a car on the American Legion side of the parking lot when three guys came up from behind and tried to rob him. After the incident, they ran across American Legion Highway.

The suspects are described as black, in their 20s and wearing hoodies.

Police recovered two shell casings at the scene.

Can't even go grocery shopping in the middle of the day! This area hasn't seen something like this for a long time.

I keep on telling people Roslindale keeps on getting worse but people don't believe me.

I don't believe you.

I would love to show my biases about that Stop & Shop, but it is a good store. Instead, I would like to note that a cop was shot to death in that parking lot back in the 1990s. Since no cops have been killed in that parking lot since (in fact, no one has) I will conclude that things are getting better in Roslindale.

that poor kid was shot (unsolved BTW) on Rowe St two years ago, which isn't far away.

A guy got shot over by Coolidge Corner yesterday. The area around MIT has also seen police tape in the same time period.

Unlike the anon who probably lives in Walpole, I'm Rozzie for life. It's as safe a place now as it was in the 80s.

Well I was a cop and I have never seen so many drug addicts and criminals walk up and down my street.

That somehow avoided Boston in the 1980s (and probably 1970s.)

Roslindale has always had their fair share of criminals and people with substance abuse problems. Heck, I remember roundabout 1987 getting a gun pulled on me on Ridge Street. By someone I knew. Mind you, it was a pellet gun, and they didn't pull the trigger, but still. By the time I got out of high school, several former classmates already had served some kind of time. Sure, Roslindale Square was not Grove Hall, but the Grove Hall today isn't even Grove Hall of the 1980s, which puts the current state of Roslindale into perspective.

I have grew up and still live on Hyde Park Avenue in Roslindale over the past 40+ years. That and the surrounding area has gotten worse over the decades. There are a lot of questionable characters that stake a claim in front of my house during the warmer months. The retaining wall in front of my house is now gang tagged. People leave all kinds of trash despite there being a trash barrel a few feet away from them while waiting for the bus... Here's what's gone on in the neighborhood over the past six months - Is this really considered "improvement"?:

And you are wondering why people hang out in front of your house? I hate to break it to you, but that's probably been going on since you were a kid.

Look, it's great that you can look things up on the Universal Hub. Thanks, Adam. The thing is, Roslindale is no worse than when you were a kid, and I can say that since we are roughly the same age. Remember when Brighams and Park Snows burnt down, leaving those charred remains for several years. Remember back in the early 90s when some residents, especially of a certain ethnicity, high tailed it to Walpole when the first people darker than a Sicilian moved in? Back in the 80s, in addition to the pellet gun incident mentioned above, my house was broken into, we had sex offenders 2 doors up and drug dealers 10 doors down. In the 90s we had major drug transactions taking place in front of our house- 2 cars would pull up, they would do their thing, and leave.

Head down the public library and check out the Transcript from when you were a kid. A lot of the same things Adam posts about now were taking place then. Less guns, but same shit.

Yes it's true that times have changed but one with a diversified perspective might say in some ways it's worse and in some ways it's better. Decades ago, times were generally much safer for various reasons. Communities back then were actually unified and commonly concerned for one another. Helping neighbors in need whatever their color or race. Kind of all for one & one for all. Then there were more morals Less guns, less drugs, less technology, less crime. More unity. Today's society seems to be all for self, No Morals, more guns, more drugs, more technology, more crime, more selfishness. For an overall comparison one might consider all things rather than just the crime rate. What about the economy, drug epidemic, unemployment rate, graduation rate, teen pregnancy, teen convictions, etc. These things matter in deciding if the place is better or worse. And as for the monsters moving to Walpole, I call them monsters because it was and is this ignorance that fueled such tragedies as slavery & the holocaust & continues to fuel racist & terrorist acts worldwide!!!! Sad but true.

Because if you're saying Roslindale today is more dangerous, more drug-ridden than it was in the 1980s or 1990s, sorry, I'm not buying it.

Yes, the Roslindale you describe is like the one I remember from the 1980s, except that racial diversity meant Irish, Italians, and Greeks side by side. That said, where I live now is a fairly helping community. I do feel bad that I don't know all of my neighbors by name, but we all know and to a good extent look out for each other, and today it is a diversity of Irish, Haitian, Dominican, Italian, and so on.
