UPDATE: Fire caused by short circuit.

Boston firefighters responded around 12:25 a.m. to 30 Myrick St., off Franklin, for what became a four-alarm fire. Around 12:55 a.m., firefighters were ordered out of the building. Ten minutes later, they were ordered off the roof as they went into "defensive" mode, aimed mainly at keeping the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Video of the fire burning through the roof.

Around 1:45 a.m., fire commanders declared the bulk of the fire knocked down and gave firefighters the OK to resume "offensive" firefighting, as shown in this photo by Allston Rat City:

The Boston Fire Department reports one firefighter suffered a back injury. At least 11 people were displaced by the fire.

I live a couple doors down, and I knew I could come to UHub to find out what I needed to know and if everyone was ok.

How crazy was that smoke?! I didn't hear the alarms or fire trucks: it was the smoke that woke me up, and I had our windows shut and AC on! I woke up shortly after 1 AM and was convinced my house was on fire it was so smoky and stinky. Sounds like it was a terrible fire. So glad everyone was ok.

The irony is that the video Adam posted was newsworthy even to those of us standing just a few yards away. My neighbors and I were on the side of the building opposite the flames, and as always happens in these cases there were a lot of unanswered questions floating around, including whether flames were visible. For whatever reason no one walked around to the other side, probably because it was an indirect route, we didn't want to get in the firefighters' way, and assumed we'd just see the same thing anyway. So when I saw the video, I was passing it around to show people the very different view from another vantage point.

As much as I'm sick of our collective attachment to our phones, they do come in handy sometimes.

Two years from now the owner will get a bill from the city for the costs incurred by the injured fire fighter. That will include medical costs, cost for time off and any other sundry costs the city can add.

In this case - running an illegal boarding house - the salt on the wound will be earned. Unfortunately our kind and loving city government does not discern between deserved and undeserved. They sprinkle the sting of salt on open wound all with equitable pain. If a fire fighter or cop is injured on your property in response to a call you will be on the hook for whatever the city can stick you for.

Love our city government.
