Spawn of a Dalek and a vibrator now patrols the Pru

Security robot at Prudential center

Neil the roving UHub photographer couldn't rove much past Mr. Roboto here yesterday. He dug up the background on Tobor:

Allied Universal, a leading facility services company and the largest security force in North America, has partnered with Boston Properties, to pilot a robot patrol program at the Prudential Center from May to August 2017. Technically called an Autonomous Data Machine, the Knightscope K5 model security robot will support the Prudential Center’s existing security team with a patrol route over the next three months. Prudential Center will be one of the first in Boston to introduce this sophisticated technology to enhance its current security program. The security robot is scheduled to start patrols within the Prudential Center retail area only on Tuesday, May 16.

If you knock it down, does it bounce back up like a Weeble, or does it just lie there, helplessly emitting little pleas for help?

... since my first thought was that it would be pretty easy to render it harmless -- or at least blind -- by covering it with a blanket.

Or with some sort of rolled-up opaque rubber sheath that you could pull out of your backpack, place on the top of its head, and unroll over it.

... just put a sticker of your favorite band on one of the camera lenses. Rinse, repeat.

Actually, the largest security force in North America, is the United States Military.

Maybe I watched to much sci-fi growing up but this thing is weird. It makes a theremin-like oscillating noise and I was waiting for a Dalek or Robbie Robot freak out.
Guess it'll take some getting used before I welcome my robot overlords at the mall.

Klaatu Barrada Nick-toe.

It might be interested to talk to it in Klingon and see if it needs to get a human.

Wandering camera scanning and documenting all the faces it passes. Hopefully it is equipped with facial recognition and can alert authorities when it detects a felon before the crime is committed. Its all about that data. Gotta get that data.

And apparently can scan license plates as well.

Wow, on one hand that's cool, on the other - who's going to secure the robot? That looks like Velodyne VLP-16 on top, which alone retails for $8K.

until they are let go due to automation of their jobs. Ya say it will never happen? Perhaps. But do not be so sure. It is disconcerting that there appears so little discussion, in general, about jobs disappearing because of automation potential of those jobs (i.e. driverless cars = potentially driverless trucks = no truck drivers). This is not good people.

i would say having people perform literally pointless tasks is also not good for society

The little shit was in my way as I was trying to get into work. So many people in suits were oohing and aaahhing around it. It looks like a big vibrator. Hopefully I will see someone riding it sooner than later:)

My first two thoughts were more along the lines of "Robin Williams has returned to us!" and "Promotional product dispenser from the L'eggs people."
