They'll sing you a song, they're the piano men - if the licensing board approves D Street plan

The Boston Licensing Board next week considers a proposal for a dueling-piano bar in the new Element Seaport Boston Hotel at 391 D St., across from the Lawn on D.

D's Keys Dueling Pianos, fronted by veteran dueling pianist Matt Nichols, needs the board's permission to buy the liquor license of the defunct Ames Plow Tavern in Faneuil Hall Marketplace. In addition to a main room, D's Keys would also have an outdoor patio in nice weather.

Nichols has pounded the keyboard at what is currently Boston's only dueling-piano bar, Howl at the Moon, as well as in Providence and other locations across the country.

Boston is still awaiting its first dueling-banjos bar.

I support this, as anyone would.

Aloft, next door, is getting a restaurant (the Social Register) and it's great to see the Element space being used.

I'm a bit skeptical that crowds will travel to this destination, but that's not for me to say (and I hope to be wrong).

Nobody in my apartment building (next door) would argue against the space, and the residents at the condo building on the other side of me are probably on-board, no problem, having known the spaces were going to be restaurants / clubs. Hopefully the new businesses can stay open late (things get very quiet after the Dunkin Donuts closes ...).

The dueling pianos thing is weird. I would never have gone to one but we saw a version while on a cruise and it was really, really good (great, even). The guys knew every single song that the audience requested (that's what they do) plus did their own choices. Or, you can just sit and drink (we went through a bottle of Fireball .. two nights in a row).

Someone (probably me) requested "Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding" by Elton John and they pulled it off, flawlessly. HOW COULD THEY DO THAT WITH JUST TWO PIANOS?
