Bad scooter drivers nabbed as scooter thieves, police say

Boston Police report arresting a trio of guys first spotted riding "erratically" on two scooters through Roxbury on the way to the Back Bay where, police say, they used a bolt cutter to steal a scooter parked on Boylston Street.

Police say officers at first lost sight of the three, one of whom had a bolt cutter, on their way towards the Back Bay, and so set up a stakeout on Cheney Street in Roxbury, where they'd spotted two of them picking up the guy with the bolt cutter, Wednesday afternoon:

The three showed up about half an hour later - with the guy who'd been a passenger on the way out now riding his own scooter, bolt cutters in hand, police say.

Officers concluded that a theft had occurred and began to walk toward the rear of the residence. As they approached, officers observed Mr. [Jacari] Cosgrove attempting to cut the lock on the seat of the red scooter. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had just been stolen from the area of 699 Boylston Street [near Exeter]. Officers also determined that the two 17-year-old juveniles were also operating stolen motor bikes.

Cosgrove, 19, was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of burglarious tools, negligent operation, prohibited operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor cycle without a license. The other two, too young to have their names released, were charged with larceny of a motor vehicle. One was also charged with negligent operation, operating a motorcycle without a license and not having a registration plate. The other was also charged with possession of burglarious tools and operating a moped without a license.

Innocent, etc.

Someone who can't afford a car.

If you're going to steal someone's vehicle, at least target a rich person. It's a better ride for you, and they'll get a loaner BMW, so less harm done.

I wonder what % of the dirt bikes and quads ridden through the streets of Boston are stolen.

Guessing 90%... They know that the police can't/won't chase them... That being said, there was some fine police work done here today! Kudos!!
