Farrell out and yet Dombrowski still has a job

The Red Sox just announced:

John Farrell will not return as manager in 2018. A search for a new manager will begin immediately.

Long overdue.

Leaving him in just a little bit too long is a perfect testament to his years of never quite knowing when to pull a pitcher

...did the same thing. It astonishes me that the home viewers, who may watch a lot of baseball, every day, are screaming at the teevee to pull a guy cuz he is obviously gassed while their beguiled managers, who've spent probably 10-20x as much time watching these guys play, sit back thinking "he's got this"...blows my mind.

Will be picking Farrell up off waivers any time soon...

Don't forget Dombrowski inherited Farrell. Assuming Dom is not going to get fired in the coming days/weeks, he now has a chance to finally pick a manager of his own.

To the people super-happy about this, every single manager he's hired since 1988 has been more old school and by the book than Farrell. Farrell managed circles around DD's guy in the 2013 ALCS, who famously said that computers scare him. This is like a Democrat celebrating Anthony Kennedy leaving SCOTUS without considering that Trump gets to replace him with someone worse. Enjoy Brad Ausmus or Ron Gardenhire.

For what it's worth, I'm ambivalent on Farrell--they could do much worse, and they could do better (though not a slam-dunk with anyone currently available). If Alex Cora is seriously considered, and gets the job, he's the only person I'd really consider a potential upgrade and good long-term play. But knowing Dombrowski's track record, I'm not holding my breath. He's a holdover from a time long gone. The much-reviled (by the anti-stats crowd) Billy Beane has as many World Series since becoming GM as Dombrowski has (zero).

Arena, Gulatti, any player over the age of 25 - clean house.

Baseball? Eh, we've had a great run under this ownership group.

he actually had a decent year. the pomerantz deal turned to gold, chris sale was brilliant until he wore down, eddie nunez was the best trade in a long time. if he stays healthy they might still be p[laying. the manager had to go. the clubhouse culture has to change. i say bring jim leyland (72?!?) in for a year with jason varitek as his bench coach. varitek might straighten out the clubhouse if nothing else.

I would like to take this time to the thank the Houston Sportsball team. Our city does not have to deal with another week of Massachusetts sportsball fans lowering the quality of life in our great city.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now hopefully the Pats get eliminated soon.

for eliminating US men's sportsball as well. Since the NY Cosmos days,.I'm hearing soccer is the next big thing in the USA, it's going to overtake the NFL/MLB/NBA..

Celtics and Bruins are right around corner. And no matter what happens, Patriots are going to be here every weekend for the rest of the year.

You've been here for a bunch of years now. You don't have to like sports, but maybe it's time to stop looking down at everything that is related to Boston.

Personally, I'm a sports fan, but I get a chuckle out of an amusing, harmless troll.

He knows what's up. Including the ALDS, the pitching staff was getting lit up in the first inning. Simple solution (Farrell should know this as a former pitcher) come inside and/or drill someone. But nooo, let's all be friends and allow opposition to tee off. Screw that. I want to win. Period. Tek the Beast won't take any crap and he can relate better to our young talented team. P.S. Judge needs a plunking too!

Varitek? The captain and de facto leader of the pitching staff of the "Chicken and Beer" team? The guy whose affair with Heidi Watney in 2008 was a huge distraction to that team? Yeah, he really seems like the authoritarian the team wants and needs. That, and he's never managed a team anywhere, ever.

I carry no brief for Jason Veritek as future manager of the Red Sox because he has no managerial experience at any level. However, the idea that his relationship with TV sports reporter Heidi Watney was a distraction that affected the Sox performance on the field is silly. And what is with the notion that the team needs an authoritarian manager?

The idea that you need some old man yelling at 32 year olds making $20million a year is absurd. Fill out the lineup card, pinch hit, manage the bullpen, and hit and run/steal at the appropriate times and you're a success.

Oh, and don't sleep with anyone but your wife.

I really don't care about the affair. I only bring it up because it's rumored to be a reason for which Farrell ultimately got canned (Jessica Moran).

Why'd you mention it? Do you really think teammates were underperforming because Variteck was cheating on his wife w/Whatney?

Dombrowski hasn’t won since 1997 old school GM that thinks 30+ year olds with heavy salaries (old Yankees model) can win the chip get a younger Minded GM
