Former state senator indicted, arrested by feds

The US Attorney's office in Boston reports the arrest of former state Sen. Brian Joyce of Milton on corruption charges this morning.

The indictment alleges that Joyce secretly profited from his position as state senator by accepting a stream of concealed bribes and kickbacks in exchange for his official action on matters before the state legislature and for exerting pressure on and advising state and municipal officials to take official action on government matters. The indictment further alleges that Joyce employed sophisticated methods to conceal his corrupt acts, including using a shell company and other entities to launder proceeds from his bribery and kickback schemes and to conceal his ongoing criminal activities.

The Globe has posted a copy of the indictment.

Innocent, etc.

Am I the only one disgusted by the practice of arresting people at home at 5am?

I believe part of the reasoning behind early morning arrests is that there is less chance of a violent confrontation. Now, I'm not sure if that is an issue in all cases such as with a defendant like this one, but that is part of it.

I suppose they could have arrested this guy at his office during the day, or asked him to surrender through counsel, etc. I'm sure each case is different.

These goddamn agents of justice should at least have the decency to at least wait until the servants are up!

Arrogance in the daytime! Time for Charlie Baker to practice the famous line in Casablanca "I'm shocked that there is corruption in the state of Massachusetts."

He was my state senator at one time, and this pleases me. Mostly due to stories like this:

The eager-to-please businessman spontaneously offered to clean Joyce’s clothes for free. Richman says now that he had no idea then just how fully Joyce would embrace the offer. The father and son estimate that Joyce typically brought in $50 to $100 worth of dry cleaning each time, representing tens of thousands of dollars in uncompensated services.

Serious ethics violation, too.

Noice.

The democrat money train is essentially an endangered mode of transportation these days.

although he was ultimately unsuccessful in banning the painful electric shocks used on the disabled kids imprisoned there. Other than that it sounds like he let the job go to his head in a major way. Unfortunate.

He was my state senator at one time and I'm glad to see corruption addressed.

I've never met him, but his office had some very good women on staff, who were helpful, courageos and generous in helping us speak up for disabled students in the public schools. I hope this doesn't smear them.

Yes Dunkin' Donuts is involved, thanks to somebody who owns 100 of its franchises in Massachusetts, who provided, among other things "regular free deliveries of up to a thousand dollars' worth of coffee and other goods." That's, well, that's a lot of coffee and donuts to get delivered all at once.

Doesn't matter if you are a cop, state rep, or sanitation inspector - anything over $50 a year is a bribe (and you have to report that $50 a year, too!)

Does that mean that the Dunkin owner will be charged as well? Also, didn't the Supreme Court legalize bribery last year?
