Off-duty Boston cop charged with OUI for Dorchester crash that sent two to the hospital

Boston Police report an off-duty officer crashed into another car at Columbia Road and Ceylon Street in Dorchester on New Year's Day, sending the two occupants of the other vehicle to the hospital - one with serious injuries.

In addition to a criminal charge of operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury, filed today, Officer Domenic Columbo was placed on leave - with pay. In a statement, Police Commissioner William Evans said:

My officers are expected to abide by the same laws they are sworn to uphold. No one is above the law, and those who break it will be held accountable. I am happy to hear that all those injured will recover, and I take this opportunity to remind everyone not to drink and drive

Columbo has been a Boston officer for six years and has not had any previous disciplinary issues, police say.

Innocent, etc.

Boston cops don't enforce traffic laws because they are dangerous criminal drivers too. This cop won't lose his job and will be behind the wheel again in a few months because cops and drivers are not held accountable in this country even though they kill tens of thousands every year.

Nobody's perfect, of course, but in a lot of cities and towns, charging a police officer with OUI would pretty much never ever happen.

It wouldn't here either. With an accident and people sent to the hospital they just had no way to overlook it in this case.

Except in this case when it caused a serious injury, so I doubt they had a choice but to charge him. Take for example Michael Doherty, the drunk cop in southie who beat up an uber driver, stole his car and got charged only with a&b. There was also the time Ed Davis' kid got caught driving driunk and was given a ride home.

Take a look at the case of the Westford cop which managed to lose his duty weapon in a recycling bin (after a few drinks a big blue bin looks just like a safe right?). Anyone else would be looking at 10 years for a safe storage law violation and a lifetime loss of their license. I doubt the Westford cop will even be charged.

Then there's the case of the officer on the Cape which got drunk and left a pistol in a bathroom where a child found it. He got off with a slap on the wrist.

State Trooper which negligently shot a woman he mistook for a deer (mighty fine beer googles there turning grandma into Bambi) and crippled her for life got a slap on the wrist when anyone else would be doing hard time.

Some animals are more special than others in MA.

for improper storage of a firearm with a valid LTC or FID. I'll wait...

The threat of 10 years is enough to force John and Jane Doe into plea deal. Meanwhile cops like you never get charged in the first place and DAs somehow forget to pursue these charges against career criminals.

I've seen two of them.

I've also seen LTC holders and illegal carriers charged with them. Not much difference.

Forgetting to take your gun with you when you take a shit isn't improper storage and wouldn't be charged for anyone, that's why I asked you and you changed your story.

You don't know what your talking about so that's ok. Just don't be a liar too.

I was referring to the Boston PD, not Westford, or some town o the cape, or the State Police.

You were still wrong.

If you were to rank all of the police departments in the world on professionalism, following the rule of law, disciplining their own miscreants, quality of their relationships with all of the constituencies they serve, about where on that list would you put the BPD?

up
Voting closed 0

Obviously that's an impossible task, but I'm certainly not going to heap praise onto any police department for simply arresting a person who drove drunk and sent two innocent people to the hospital.

Not bad.. still getting paid.... probably still gonna do details...lol... sad but true... only reason charged was injuries and accident....double standard.

Not bad...saved a guys life 3 years ago....Throw your stones Levin.

Yes, almost killed two people BUT HE DID HIS JOB 4 YEARS AGO.

Blue fellation has got to stop.

and almost killed two others last week breaking the laws he swore to uphold, so whats your point?

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I was struck that instead of praying for the victims Evans is essentially assuring us they're already fine and dandy. Does he usually do that when discussing a crime, a suspect, and the victims? This is a serious offense. I think with most other driving jobs the internal HR investigation of such an incident would be fairly quick and result in a quick firing- whether there was a conviction or not, whether the alleged conduct was on-duty or not.
Even if Saul Goodman comes riding in heroically to save this cop on a technicality, in one of those corrupt "bench trials", the public shouldn't be put at risk by having this guy back on the job. People normally do time for this sort of thing, don't they?
A Spotlight series on the BPD is overdue, I think, even if it just serves to give a periodic roundup of these sorts of incidents and their eventual resolutions.

What does that have to do with anything? The fact that this guy has performed the duties of his job is completely irrelevant to him driving drunk and nearly killing two people. Are you trying to argue that he should be free to drive drunk because he did his job in the past?

No, but it’s part of the story. Hero cop drinks and drives and seriously injures person.

You know, facts and such.

I’ve seen your hate filled comments on here more and more. And as cool as it is to fight anonymously on the internet, I’m not going to let your hate filled heart bother me too much. Anyway, good luck behind the keyboard!

This particular cop is now be defined for one wrong mistake he made on his own personal time on new years eve. Everyone here is so quickly to say he's not going to get charged because he's a cop. The bottom line is this yes he drove a car drunk yes that is wrong but I bet you everybody who has posted something on this website today has drove a car once or more than once drunk or has gotten into a vehicle with someone who has drove drunk so before you guys want to start harassing this cop over one mistake that I'm sure all of you have made before in your life there's more to him he's a great cop who made a stupid judgement on his own personal time and now he is paying for it. All I'm saying is all your people who are posting negative things about this cop you just think right now whether it was yesterday 10 years ago 20 years ago don't be a hypocrite because I'm sure you have driven a car trunk or gotten into a car with somebody who was driving drunk you just were able to get home that day and didn't get caught.

That's what your drunk bike is for.

That's what cabs are for.

That's what friends are for.

Stop making excuses for addict behaviors.

I wonder how many drunks rely on you to make excuses for them?

The victims could have been killed, and depending on the severity of their injuries their lives may never be the same. It's not about getting caught.
This guy never heard of Uber? You're a law enforcement officer. Obey the fucking laws.

Adam, it’s good to know that you allow comments like this one to be published but when I want to criticize some of the rampant neo-liberalism in this city and state, you deny it. I guess I know where you stand now.

Now that I've looked at the comment, yes, it's reprehensible.

I'm actually sitting now.

when you comment anonymously it goes through an admin approval process but if you have an account it will automatically post. Maybe you should just create an account.

In regards to your "I guess I know where you stand now." comment; are you inferring that police officers should not have to follow the same laws as the rest of us?

I'm sorry that you don't consider somebody who endangers the public by selfishly driving drunk to be a pig.

You suck. when you need a police officer you'll change your mind. Until then call the garbage man you ass hole.
Judging by your spelling you have most likely have been on the other side

up

Just because you don't know the definition of a word doesn't mean that it's misspelled. Are you a cop or just a bootlicker?

P.S. Sanitation workers are more likely to die on the job than cops. So maybe I SHOULD call a garbage man. They seem like the real heroes here.

they need to be held to a higher standard, not a lower one. When you actually have to deal with a thug officer with no recourse you'll change your mind.

Daily reminder that this cop made $166k including $60k in details in 2016 -- puting him in the top 3% of all U.S. salaries. This is normal for MA but nonetheless part of a corrupt system that is robbing taxpayers. Even if COB doesn't pay the detail, a construction company or utility company does and then passes the cost onto you. Wake up!

Dominic A Columbo Police Officer Boston Police Department 2016 SALARY: $82,383.86 $24,182.70 GROSS: $166,798.56 DETAILS:$59,432.00
