Brighton man gets up to 6 1/2 years behind bars for killing passenger in drunken tunnel crash he survived

A Suffolk Superior Court judge today sentenced Craig Lawlor, 25, to five to six years in state prison, followed by six months in a county jail, for drunkenly driving his pickup into Jersey barriers in the Sumner Tunnel, which killed his friend, Dillon Cohen, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

A judge found Lawlor guilty of manslaughter by motor vehicle, motor vehicle homicide by operating under the influence of alcohol, and operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury in a jury-waived trial last month.

Lawlor's sentence actually includes 2 1/2 years in a county jail, but with two years of that suspended provided he stay out of trouble, test negative on drug and alcohol tests and perform 100 hours of community service.

What is the point of the county jail sentence?

"If you enter treatment, do community service, etc., we'll knock a couple years off your sentence" bit an option? For a drunk that kills somebody, shouldn't those things be MANDATORY in addition to the jail time?
