Menino either loses cool or goes Barney Frank on guy at forum

John Keith e-mails from DotOut's mayoral forum tonight:

Guy from Dorchester stood up and said the Mayor was getting a free pass from [the gay and lesbian] community, that he doesn't march [in the Southie parade] but walks down the side of the street. The Mayor shouted out "that's a lie and you know it!" Then the guy said "wow, that's the first time I've been called a liar by a mayoral candidate" and the Mayor responded "because that's what you are!"

Ed. question: Anybody know who's right?

Flaherty spokesperson Jon Romano told the Gazette that Menino is hypocritical because he gets credit for not marching in the parade while standing on its sidelines, shaking hands. “It’s called a ‘ploy-cott,’ not a boycott,” Romano said.

I'll go with this guy. He ought to know if he's been called a liar by a mayoral candidate.

"wow, that's the first time I've been called a liar by a mayoral candidate."

I know Barney asked a Lyndon Larouche supporter: What planet do you spend most of your time on? But I don't remember him calling anyone a liar. Has Barney called a constituent a liar before? If you were being inexact, could you fix it?

I've seen Barney lose his temper but he's much more clever (even at that most out of control moment) than to question a person's integrity or veracity. He belittles ignorant opinions but he does it without making it about the person who asserted them; he keeps the perspective of his own point of view, and in reference to himself. "Arguing with you would be like...."

I think Menino, by not marching in the segregationist Saint Patty's Day Parade in South Boston, was getting credit for his principled stand ... until he got called out it tonight for going anyway to hang out and gett the benefit of pressing the flesh.

He would have done better asserting and re-asserting that he didn't march. I think he could get away with splitting hairs on this but not calling the constituent a liar. Watch the newspapers tomorrow.

I think this story really misses the point tonight. Mayor Menino received all most twice the support of the DotOut voters. The Mayor has spoken out for the GLBT community for years now and Mr. Keith (who if you check on Twitter is an open Flaherty) supporter is trying to take what was likely a twenty second back and forth and have it over shadow a two hour event where Menino blew away the other candidates with support from DotOut.

I didn't take sides! I only mentioned it because it was totally unexpected and certainly put some life into the night. All I did was state what happened; you were there, was I inaccurate? I can't edit my comment, below, to reflect the fact I support Flaherty, sry.

BTW, I was there as an observer; I'm not a member.

This is one of Menino's biggest scams. He doesn't march in the parade quite frankly because he is too lazy to walk the route. He spends his whole day in Southie. He attends parties there and schmoozes all the people who are out from the parade.

It's about time Menino was called out on this. He has been a good mayor on LGTB issues, but his "I don't march" mantra is nonsense.

up

And yet he makes a really strong point of stating that he does not officially march because of the parade's discrimination. Unlike any of the other candidates.

Mike Deehan from the Dorchester Reporter tweets the group endorsed Connolly, Kenneally and Pressley, but not Murphy (because he didn't have a set of double letters in his name?).

Menino got 63.1% to Flaherty's 34.2% - group rules require a 2/3's vote for an endorsement.

John Keith, an avowed Flaherty supporter, gets this kind of real estate. Flaherty lies again and here's a minion. Mayor Menino has stuck by his guns since the beginning, and does not march in the parade, period.

Meanwhile, JK says on Twitter:

"Mike Flaherty is going to make a great Mayor!1:21 PM Aug 13th from web"

Menino routinely walks along the route as the parade is going on. Dropping in to house parties and greeting parade goers. Stays in Southie all day.

admittedly, I am a Menino supporter
when the Flaherty supporter said what he said, the Mayor shouted,
"that's a lie". It was the speaker who said he'd been called a liar. BTW, the speaker said he had worked with Flaherty as an Asst DA and was therefor a friend.
My support comes from what Menino has done for my 'hood, not a personal friendship.

I go to the Southie parade and I have seen the Mayor drive by after/near the street sweepers, so he is there, but not in a public role.

Mayor Menino has a long, an unyielding, connection to Boston's GLBT community. The real story on tonight's DotOut event is that Menino won all most twice the vote that Flaherty did. Mr. Keith (who if you check on Twitter) is an avid Flaherty campaigner) misses the point that once again tonight the GLBT community stood up overwhelmingly for the Mayor.

up
Voting closed 0

Whoa. The events of the night certainly weren't expected.

I'll leave it to real reporters to tell you what happened, but pretty much it's what I wrote above.

Yoon gave a weak speech, I think. McCrea's speech was excellent. Flaherty gave a good speech. The Mayor gave a long speech and continued to talk even after being given the shut-off sign from the moderator.

On the first round of balloting, Tom Menino got somewhere around 54%, Mike Flaherty somewhere around 35%, Kevin McCrea somewhere around 8% and Sam Yoon got 2.7%. So, McCrea and Yoon were out. On the second vote, Menino went up to 59% and Flaherty was at 38%.

Since their bylaws state a candidate must get two-thirds of votes cast in order to receive endorsement, there was another vote. Went 63% Menino, 34% Flaherty. (Apparently, someone just kept writing himself/herself in or left the ballot blank??)

This was supposed to be it; three ballots and if no 2/3's, no endorsement, but a motion was made to change ('suspend') the rule and have a fourth vote. Motion carried, vote taken, still no 2/3's.

That was supposed to be it, but someone made a motion to change ('suspend') the rule and allow an endorsement with less than 2/3's of the vote. Motion did not pass. No endorsement.

I guess it's fine for an organization to set whatever rules it likes, but you could also argue that they made the rules for a reason, and to simply change them at will is suspect, especially given the wide support the Mayor had in the room.

The number one issue for the GLBT community in Dorchester? Charter schools, apparently, based on the number of questions each candidate had to answer on the subject.

Finally, for the first time in this race for Mayor, Mayor Menino has shown his true colors. He throws temper tantrums like a two year old toddler. Grow up and be the 16 year incumbent Mayor that your supposed to be. Menino is a complete embarrassment to not only the GLBT community but this great city. He no longer has the temperament to serve our city and the fact that he would attack a resident and call him a liar at a public forum underscores this point. Menino was outed tonight for the GIANT baby he is. Grow up and either lead this city or get out of the way.

Thank you John for your reporting on the event.

I am admittedly a supporter of the Mayor, but it would appear the Mayor received more than 50-percent of the vote from the group four consecutive times. To me, that's the headline from the forum.

The President of DotOut is on the mayor's payroll, another board member admitted he was a former Feeney aide, I heard that another was a lawyer for the city, there were all kinds of teachers and a principal for on of the schools there...this was Mayor Menino's endorsement to lose. And he did. I don't know the guy who asked the question about the parade personally, but he spoke earlier in the meeting about sending his kid to BPS and being concerned that so many people are leaving the city because of the schools. I thought the mayor was out of line to call him a liar. If he was wrong about Menino attending the Southie parade (was he?) then just tell him or explain why he is wrong, there was no need to interrupt and yell at him and call him a liar.

A few weeks ago McCrea was asked in a TV interview (Jim Braude?) what Mayor Menino's most positive accomplishment was. Without missing a beat McCrea said that as a resident of the South End, he was a strong admirer of Menino's early and longstanding support for gay rights. I would tend to agree with that. But Menino only got 53% of the vote from a group that should be overwhelmingly favorable to him. Although it appears from the numbers that this was a group of only 3 dozen people - the fact that the campaign has barely started and the mayor is barely garnering a majority has to be a concern as the "not Menino" vote totalled 47%. I would take some solace as the mayor that apparently the "not Flaherty" vote seemed stronger as he did not pick up any of the Yoon or McCrea supporters in later votes - but not sure that sentiment transfers as easily to the general population. One thing is for sure - sounds like this is going to be the interesting campaign that Boston deserves.

"it appears from the numbers that this was a group of only 3 dozen people"

Wow, all the talk about who gets 53% or 47% or 3% is meaningless. I'd much rather see the vote result in a group of 36 by quoted at 19/36.

That Menino has a short temper is not news. Whether you need one to be a successful Mayor in the city of Boston is the question.

Tom Menino is the liar -- not the guy he yelled that at tonight in Dorchester. He makes a day of it in Southie every St. Patrick's Day Parade day. He goes to the pre-parade Breakfast, greets parade units as they form, walks along the route greeting attendees, and stops in at dozens of parade parties well into the night.

On Dot Out's first ballot, Menino was only at 54% of the vote. But he stayed and tried to bully everyone. And he was helped by the City Hall employees who were afraid of they didn't they would either get fired and frozen out of the Menino power crowd. Boston needs a new Mayor.

overwhelmingly with the Mayor? Close to 50% chose another candidate on the first ballot before the City Hall bullies jumped in and tried to change the rules.

To the best of my knowledge, Mayor Menino has not marched in the parade out of respect to the GLBT community, and he usually attends events of family or friends who are having St. Patty's day celebrations of their own. I can't remember the last time I've seen him have press coverage for being at the parade. But the city councillor who represents that part of the city has definitely been front and center there and in the press for it.

When someone claimed that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job during an address Bill Clinton responded as he should have. Simply, "How dare you?" This is the Mayor acting in kind, and appropriately responding to a ludicrous accusation. Criticizing someone for that just doesn't make sense.

Looks like Hizzonnuh found himself an IRL purity troll!

Not content to wander internet fora scolding people about not being gay enough, purity troll took to the streets to find tiny distinctions about whether the mayor was really doing it right!

I don't think this guy would be satisfied unless Menino had marched wearing gold lame, heels, sequins, feather boa, etc. Only then he'd have been trying too hard.

I agree, I think NOT marching in the parade is a pretty big thing. That alone is enough to annoy and anger many Irish politicos in the city. That is more then most other politicians in Boston did, since most of them not only marched in the parade they brought signs and everything with them. He is still the mayor of the city and currently is still running for the seat so I do not have a problem with him showing up in the area to talk to friends and others. I think he made his point perfectly clear that he does not support the decision of the parade organizers and took a step that nobody else close to his stature would make.

That being said I think he has been in for too long and should have stepped down this year.

I'm gay and have lived in Boston for over 25 years and had friends involved in the Southie St. Patrick's Day legal case. I remember the crowd spitting, throwing things and turning their backs on the marchers of the Irish-American Gay Lesbian, and Bisexual Group of Boston. It still makes me angry.

That being said I have no ill will toward the people of Southie and don't mind if Tom Menino goes to the area during the parade and shakes hands. The point is his being vocally against the exclusion of organized LGBTQ marchers by the parade organizers. In fact, his being on the sidelines rather than in the parade only serves to underscore the reason he's not marching.

At the beginning of the race I was looking at Michael Flaherty to show me he wasn't a part of that same old Democratic Southie Machine of the Bulger-Stephen Lynch variety. And one of the ways he could have done this was to have refused to march in a parade that is discriminatory toward a part of his constituency. He didn't do this. That was enough for me. Menino has been and continues to be a STRONG ally to the LGBTQ community and if Flaherty couldn't commit to us on this very visible and visceral issue then there was no reason to consider changing horses.

The Mayor had every right to go back at someone who was rude like that. And as for going long, the moderator gave him one tap which would seem to wrap it up and she didn't stop him again.

up
Voting closed 0

I can understand why the guy asking the question, sees it the way his sees it ... that Menino says he doesn't march but is there all day shaking hands.

Was he rude in the way he asked the initial or countered the initial answer? I don;t know, I wasn't there. If he was rude as opposed to just pressing for accountability then he may have set off mumbles temper and we can blame him for Menino not having more poise.

Either way Menino lost his temper. That's not a problem in and of itself but if it is the pattern, then we know difficult conversations in the Mayor's office are short-lived and do not have an opportunity to get all the facts on the table.

For me, it's disappointing that any mayoral candidate officially participates... PAYS a registration fee and attaches his/her name to participate in a parade that discriminates against the LGBT & allied community of the city they want to serve. By actively speaking out on the discrimination, Mayor Menino's set a pretty high example that all the mayoral candidates are going to have to strive for.

In a March issue of the Boston Globe, Yoon... who bills himself as the "progressive" candidate... said that he is discriminated against by the parade officials by being given a spot in the back of the parade, near the horses, after he wrote an angry letter.

Frankly, I find it offensive that Yoon compares a Supreme Court case by LGBT groups to an "angry letter" and marching in front of horses to being actively discriminated against.

If I have to stand on the sidelines of the parade as an Irish lesbian, then I want a mayor who is standing on the sidelines with me.

up
Voting closed 0

uuuugh, no one has to stand on the sidelines. Most are welcome to participate. Many gays do, they just march in support/connection of something other than who they prefer to sleep with. Hopefully I'm not being arrogant to assume that people who happen to be gay have more to offer than just being gay.

up

GLBT folks have a whole culture and community beyond "who people are sleeping with."

Also, you're basically saying that GLBT people should just march in the closet. That's a homophobic and ridiculous comment. Anyone should be able to march and shouldn't have to suppress their identity to do it.

Okay some I am reading Bay Windows where the Mayor calls David Breen a lair and says, "Let’s get this rumor out in the open. That’s a lie and you know it. I don’t march. I have friends and I attend parties".

So he walks along the sidelines greeting people, he has friends and he attends parties. How does that differ with those marching in the parade? Give me a friggin break! If you going to boycott the parade, you boycott the parade. That means you don't show up? Are we stupid people! For cris sakes!!! There is no such thing as a little pregant, you either are or you are not.

The Mayor is once again trying to have his cake and eat it too. Again you either show up or you don't show up! That makes a statement!!!

He is not boycotting the whole holiday

Imagine if you went to Vegas and one of the the casinos had sexist hiring policies. Can you boycott that one casino but still go to other casinos in the area?

He has never backed down from his statement that the organizers are wrong and has not marched in the parade. Compare that to Yoon and Flaherty who both marched in the parade. I think your yelling at the wrong candidate.
