Woman run down by drag racers on Hyde Park Avenue

Teen arrested; driver of green Civic or Honda black Acura Integra also sought.

She could lose a leg (dear Channel 4: Hyde Park Avenue isn't just in Hyde Park; you make that mistake every single time).

Boston Police report.

Every few months, police crack down on Civic-driving drag racers who show up from across the state on either Hyde Park Avenue or Washington Street. Poor woman.

The best solution

Seize this little shit's car, liquidate it, and apply that money to her medical bills.

Why do I get the feeling that won't happen?

because it would be a drop in the bucket?

That car is worth maybe a couple grand at most- barely the first 5 minutes of an ER visit that serious. Hell, ambulance rides cost a fortune alone.

That's the point of insurance. However, a lot of policies don't cover racing, so I'm not sure how it would all play out for everyone.

Head for the horizon

That strip from Cummings to Walk Hill is too tempting for too many -- straight and wide.

I remember when I used to walk to the Flaherty pool before 6 a.m. seeing folk booking north at 60 more higher, running red lights. When take-no-crap cop Ernie is out, he invariably pulls dozens in a short time. Of course, he is famous for even ticketing the little old ladies who ignore the 25 and 30 MPH zones there.

I bike and walk as well as drive that part of HP Ave. Plus my wife and two youngest are also at home and at risk. I'm for enforcement.Do it, Ernie.

Washington Street no better

Last fall, the cops tried to bust up drag races by people congregating at the Emporium - for the second time in a few months.

Police: He hit her, then just kept on driving

Boston Police provide some details of what allegedly happened after the drivers of a red Honda and a black Acura revved their engines at Hyde Park Avenue and Walk Hill Street around 7:30 last night:

When the traffic light turned green, both vehicles accelerated at a high rate of speed. An officer nearby observed the two vehicles and immediately broadcast a description of the cars and their direction of travel.

In short time, one of the motor vehicles, the red Honda, struck a pedestrian in the area of Hyde Park Avenue and Eldridge Road in Jamaica Plain. The victim, a 65 year-old Hispanic female, was transported to the Brigham & Women’s Hospital with serious, but, non-life threatening injuries. Upon striking the pedestrian, the operator of the red Honda continued traveling down Hyde Park Avenue.

Police caught up with the Honda at Blakemore Street, where they arrested Kenneth Mauras, 17, of Roslindale on a whole boatload of charges.

The driver of the black Acura Integra with tinted windows remains at large, but if you see one, call the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1(800) 494-TIPS or text the word 'TIP' to CRIME (27463).

smart, speeding in front of a cop

drag racing at 7:30pm, when it's still light out and people are on the road, seems kind of dumb. shouldn't they like wait for an empty street or the cover of darkness or something?

Emporium

For what its worth Emporium, which serves as sort of pit area for these guys has been seeking to stay open 24 hours. Not sure if that would help or hurt the racing situation.

Civic racing is crazy man

By Spatch | Sun, 06/01/2008 - 8:19am

I used to drive a '93 Honda Civic. Haven't for about four years now, but around 2000 or so, if I was driving around Boston late at night, I'd constantly be challenged for races by other Civic drivers. They'd pull up behind me on the Pike at 3:00 am between the Pru tunnel and Allston-Brighton tolls and flash their brights, which meant "Hey man, let's race." I only found this out the second or third time it happened to me, after I wondered aloud why someone was coming up behind me at night and hollering at me for going too slowly on an otherwise empty stretch of road.

So I learned to respond by stepping slightly on my brakes which meant "Dude, pull around and see the busted side light and crappy tires and the dent on the roof where a tree limb fell on the car several years ago which I never could hammer out all the way THIS AIN'T EXACTLY IN TIP-TOP RACING SHAPE, OK?"

Eventually the car was rendered inoperable by kids who managed to crack the hood while it was parked, steal ages-old ignition wires and bust up the distributor cap while trying to nick it as well. Little punks. Shame such bad things had to happen to such a nice car.

Truman Parkway has the same

By anon (not verified) | Mon, 06/02/2008 - 12:36pm

Truman Parkway has the same problem. Even worse, since it is a State road in a city neighborhood, the Staties(Hillside Barracks) want nothing to do with it. I speed-dial them regularly to report drag racing and you want to know what they ask? "Did you get the license plate number?"
Traffic stops are typically on a Friday morning at 10am.
