First fatal student fall of the season in Allston
A BU Medical School student visiting friends fell to his death off a third-story fire escape at 5 Walbridge St. in Allston around 12:30 this morning, according to Boston Police and Boston University.
Boston Police report: "Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was injured as a result of an accidental fall."
BU Today identifies him as Babur Khalique, a third-year student at BU Medical School who had just begun training in biomedical engineering.
""He was a brillant and engaged medical and biomedical engineering student with a promising future," Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore said. "His death is a great loss."
The Daily Free Press quotes a neighbor as saying Khalique appeared drunk before going onto the fire escape.

high pressure school
when i asked a bu medical student about his colleague--the fledgling serial killer--he told me the pressures at bu medical were immense.
he said it was the most expensive medical school in the country.
since he was dual degree
since he was dual degree with BME, his tuition was probably paid for. And he probably was on a stipend of $9,200 a semester for living expenses like all the other BME students in their first year. I say this as a BME student in the same program. ( see http://www.bu.edu/eng/facforms/documents/RA%20Contract%20form%20AY09-10%20updated%206-9-09.xls for stipend rates)
Jocular headline is ill-mannered
Whatever happened with the student drinking, this is a tragedy, and trying to make a joke of it with a dismissive headline is in poor taste.
Some people, Howie Carr comes to mind, are always ready to make fun of other's tragic mistakes.
Adam, you don't want to be associated with the modes of Howie, do you?
Yes, his death is tragic
He seemed like a bright kid with a bright future.
At the same time, the sad fact is that fatal student falls have become a regular occurrence in Boston - the Globe reports there's been at least one each year since 2007. To me, that's part of the story.
