Are we paying some cop to twitter the day away?

Although I suspect the answer is the cop is doing other things; it's not like there's a new tweet every 30 seconds.

One thing that always amazes me are those stories about UFOs and meteors and what not where you always read something like:

Police in the normally quiet rural town reported several hundred phone calls from residents wondering what they'd just seen

If nothing else, maybe Boston's nascent emergency Twitter feeds will reduce calls like that here. While we don't tend to have too many alien abductions in Boston (that we know of, I guess), why shouldn't police help the public - and possibly reduce some of their own workload - by letting people know about stuff that could affect their daily lives?

So in this particular case, even if you don't care that there's somebody lying on the subway platform with fresh bullet holes, why is it a bad thing that BPD tries to warn people that Roxbury Crossing's going to be a madhouse and that maybe they should try another way to get home? And, yes, as a news junkie, I appreciate them explaining why the place is a madhouse, as opposed to the more generic MBTA "police activity" messages.

is the one doing the twitting.

The BPD has tons of civilians and interns that do stuff like that.

Im sure the union would want to assign a cop to that job though!

No, that's Muggles. Roxbury Stabbing is a bit further down the road.

I've lost count of how many times this has happened. There are 300 transit cops - leave one there at all times.

Another person is stabbed or shot and everyone ignores it and instead, talks about other things like how the news of the crime got out there. Why doesn't anyone care anymore? Helloooo People!!!!! Someone could have been killed and all you can do is talk about is twitters or blogs or whether or not your train is going to be late or something.... Wake up.

As an Orange Line rider, this is a real concern. Hopefully the Ruggles-RoxCross-Jackson Sq stretch of the O Line has an ongoing police presence, especially during a.m. rush and mid/late afternoon.

I posted about it not because it came over Twitter (I save that for discussions about rival fire feeds), but because somebody was stabbed at Roxbury Crossing and thought somebody might like to know.

But at the same time, it's possible to wonder if emergency departments should be on Twitter to being with. I'd say yes, but obviously one anon begs to differ.

Channel 7 says a teenager was stabbed outside the station, but then went inside to seek help.
