Kid stabbed on school bus in South Boston

Boston Police report a 15-year-old who demanded her iPod back from a kid she says had stolen it from her two weeks ago wound up getting stabbed around 2 p.m. yesterday as the bus drove down I Street.

The male suspect refused to give her back her I-Pod and then the Black female that was accompanying the male suspect attacked the victim. The victim was assaulted before being stabbed. The male suspect then stole the victim's cellular phone. Both suspects jumped from the bus through the rear emergency exit door.

The girl was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Police say they found the pair on Middle Street, along with the girl's cell phone. Sameisha Smith, 17, was charged with armed robbery with a knife, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (a shod foot) and assault and battery. Her alleged companion, not named because he's 16, was charged with juvenile delinquency by means of armed robbery and juvenile delinquency by means of a dangerous weapon (a knife).

Innocent, etc.

Why is the race of the stabber the only race identified? Are we to assume that the other students are white because their race is not identified? This is an issue across many media outlets in this city. Race is only identified if the person is black or latino and many times if they are the perpetrator of the crime. If we are going to label race, then it should be labeled all of the time, not just some of the time. Maybe we should just not label race at all.

BPD actually identified the race of both suspects - something they always do. In this case, probably more out of habit than anything else, since race is one of the descriptors they use when seeking suspects. I ran an excerpt from their account, which only mentions the one guy's race for some reason.

They don't mention the race of the victim, but that's hardly unusual - in that case, it's not needed, since the victim doesn't need to be found.

Quoting:

I'm not so sure. I definitely see suspects identified explicitly as "white", as recently as yesterday.

This might be a good thing to research: Does reporting of race of suspects identified in these logs vary by race; and if so, why? You can also look at how it varies by time, jurisdiction, officer, person preparing the log you're analyzing, etc.

I suspect the conclusion will be that there is no discernible racial bias in whether race is identified in the logs. But even if that is the conclusion, that is a useful finding to publicize, since part of the race relations problem is *perceived* bias, as distinct from *actual* bias.

the TV news often does not report the suspects race if that person is a minority. they will report the gender, height/weight, clothing, etc, but not the race.

The bassackwards place where my mom lives (not anywhere in New England) publishes the entire police log online. They report the age and race of every. single. person. mentioned.

"A 45-year-old white male at 123 Pine Street placed a call to 911 and stated that there was a loud party next door."

"A 23-year-old black female called to report that her vehicle had broken down on Main Street and she was in need of assistance."

"Police rang the doorbell and spoke with a 35-year-old Asian male, who stated that he had not seen anything suspicious."
