Mattapan armed robbery ends in manhunt

Boston Police report an armed holdup at a Mattapan convenience store ended with a manhunt in the Mattahutt woods after officers fired at the fleeing suspects when they began driving right at them.

Johnny Alexander Sanchez, 18, of Boston and Miguel Lopez, 42, of Boston, were charged with armed robbery while masked, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (car), resisting arrest and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police say the chase began around 8 p.m. Sunday when an officer noticed a robbery in progress at a convenience store at Walk Hill Street and Blue Hill Avenue:

The Officer notified Boston Police operations of his observations as he followed the fleeing suspects as they proceeded out of the area in a green mini-van. Back-up units arrived and officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicle. The suspects refused to stop and drove towards the officers, striking one of their vehicles. Officers fearing for their safety discharged their firearms at the suspects. The suspects were able to proceed on towards Colorado Street where they crashed their vehicle into a wooded area. The suspects exited their vehicle and fled on foot into the Mattahutt woods.

Officers surrounded the area and report finding discarded clothing and currency before capturing the pair, police say, adding a loaded gun was found near the crashed mini-van.

The Boston Police Firearm Discharge Team is investigating this incident.
