Man who says no to East Boston mugger gets hacked up with butcher knife

District A-7 reports that when a man walking down Bennington Street around 3 a.m. on Monday refused a mugger's demand to "run his pockets," the thug pulled out a butcher knife and stabbed the man several times in the chest and then, as he lay on the ground, stabbed him in the left arm for good measure. And then he took the man's cell phone and ran away.

The victim was taken to Mass. General for treatment.

The mugger was described as a medium-complexioned Hispanic male, between 5'2" and 5'5", about 28-30 years old. And he had "M.S." tattooed on his forehead, police say.

A week earlier, police reported that three members of the local wing of MS-13 chased a man down the same stretch of Bennington with a variety of bladed weapons.

When I was trying to decide on where to move a couple of years ago, one of the choices was a condo located "just steps from" Maverick Sq (i.e. a 10 minute walk). I'm kind of glad I chose Somerville instead.

Eastie has it's moments but it's not all that bad. I've lived in Newton, Somerville, Medford, Cambridge, Jamaica Plain, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, East Boston and Southie (all within the last 10 years). I go out a lot at night, and I've seen my share of 'stuff'. The worst crimes I've witnessed were in Somerville (a young girl shot a young boy point blank in David Square) and Jamaica Plain (police car chase down my street the 'wrong' way).

The most important thing to remember no matter where you live: when the economy stinks and the weather is hot, crime is going to happen. Until the economy turns around or the snow starts falling, watch your back everywhere.

Can we find the dwelling in which MS-13 congregates and blow it up? We'd do that with terrorists in other countries. Why not do it here?

We're not actually at war with East Boston. That makes it a no-no.

Then just send them back to El Salvador, if that's indeed where they are from.

around the corner from the East Boston Police station where, on any given time of day/night, a majority of the police cars are sitting there. Not patroling. And their "undercover" cars? All they do is drive around and act tough (think Michael Chiklis in the Shield) in their Crown Vic.

Hey, on the plus side, at least this crime was reported when compared to the many that aren't being reported.

Forgive me for asking the obvious question, but won't the M.S. tatooed on this idiot's forehead make him reasonably easy to find? I mean, I know there are other idiots like him, but shouldn't it narrow down the number of participants in the lineup?

On a different note, a really troublesome thing about this is that it seems like the uptick (either in reported or actual incidents) seems to be somewhat random - like it might be some kind of initiation rite.
