Two die in triple shooting at Dorchester restaurant

Boston Police report an argument at the Ka-Carlos Bar and Grill, 33 Hancock St. in Uphams Corner, left two dead and one injured early this morning.

One man, 47, was pronounced dead inside Ka-Carlos, which specializes in Cape Verdean food, police say. The Web site ForCV identifies him as Manny Monteiro, a chef who was working two jobs to put his daughters through college, and who formerly worked at Phillips Old Colony in Dorchester as a sous-chef.

A second man, 20, was found around the corner at 8 Bird St. with multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. A third victim, 23, got himself to Boston Medical Center, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police say:

According to witnesses, an altercation began inside the premise. Witnesses further stated that as the altercation moved its way outside, witnesses say they could hear shots being fired.

Anyone with information can contact homicide detectives at 617-343-4470, or the anonymous tip line at 1-800-494-TIPS.

"3 go in, one comes out. I know, guns don't kill people..."

That's right, guns don't kill people,
PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!

Outlaw the guns, and people will switch to knives. If you don't believe me, look at crime statistics in the UK.

The issue is behavioral, the focus needs to be on the users not the inanimate objects. A gun is a paper weight without a user. If weapons didn't exist, the same jerks would eventually be killing each other with their bare hands. The intent doesn't change, merely the objects used to get the desired effect.

How I heard it, it was referring to the introduction of firearms or some kind of firearm, perhaps in warfare, and it went: "Never before have so many brave men been killed by so many cowards."

by montluc "...would to god this accursed instrument had never been invented... so many brave and valiant men would not have met their deaths at the hands very often of the greatest cowards".

he goes on to talk about men who are knocked down from a distance. his main issue, as i think you are pointing out, is that guns allow you to kill from a distance. they depersonalize violence by allowing it to happen from great lengths.

That has to be the origin of the bastardized quote I heard, and is better.

No, he doesn't like that you can be weak and kill.

"they depersonalize violence by allowing it to happen from great lengths."

While true in the general sense of warfare, most of these shootings are occurring at very close ranges with a deliberate attempt to make the act of violence as personal as possible.

For instance, you can't throw the knife across the room and expect to injure or kill the intended target.

I suspect that most of the thugs, if you said, "Why don't you fight me like a *real man*?" would blast you with their handgun and think themselves the more badass for it.

Too bad Australia is such a nice place now, because we could use a penal colony to exile people who *really don't want to* live in civilized society.

Of course this would have to be paired with making sure everyone got a fair shake. But part of that would be getting the lawless sociopaths out of the public housing and low-income neighborhoods, so that the people who *want* to be parts of society don't have a criminal environment forced upon them.

There are more information about the chef killed forcv.com, the local Cape Verdean news site:

It also makes him the second innocent victim of out-of-control gunmen in the city in a week (the first being that girl who was in her own home and got shot in the leg).

Maybe we need a commenting policy that we refrain from talking about how:

1) guns are bad or
2) every person should be armed

unless the post is specific to pending gun-related legislation. Just a thought. People are never going to have a reasonable discussion about this issue, and it just derails so many threads.
