Boston Police report undercover officers from the gang unit placed two armed teens under arrest at the Charlestown Housing Development around 6 p.m. yesterday as part of an effort to squash a rising number of gun incidents in the neighborhood.
BPD provided this account:
Officers were on directed patrol in the area of the Charlestown Housing Development due to an increase in firearm related incidents when they observed an individual standing in the walkway next to Bunker Hill Street. As officers started walking in the direction of this individual, they observed the two suspects exit the doorway of 145 Bunker Hill Street and stand next to the same individual standing in the walkway. Officers, being in plain clothes, were closely monitored by the suspects as they approached. When officers were within close range of the suspects, one officer engaged the suspects in conversation leading one of the suspects to say, "Oh, you're not who I thought you were." Officers at this time, removed and displayed their badge at which point, suspect Denis immediately grabbed the right side of his waistband and took off running.
Police say the first suspect's flight came to an end when he ran into a parked police cruiser - sending him and the gun he was allegedly carrying flying in separate directions.
Police then charged Kevin P. Dennis, 18, of Hyde Parkwith unlawful possession of a fireamr, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm and assault by means of a dangerous weapon. They added charges of possession with intent to distribute heroin and possession with intent to distribute heroin within 100 feet of a playground after they found "a sandwich bag containing two small plastic bags of brown powder believed to be heroin on his person."
His companion, Stephen D. Woodard, 19, of Malden, was charged with trespassing and carrying a dangerous weapon - a knife with a blade in excess of 2.5 inches, police say.
Innocent, etc.
