DA: Downtown Crossing shoplifter was loaded for bear, so he gets bail to match

An East Boston teen charged with trying to steal two pairs of pants from Macy's in Downtown Crossing Saturday evening, was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail today - not so much because of the pants but because of the loaded handgun security guards allegedly found on him.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports Jason Morales, 18, was nabbed around 6:30 p.m. after allgedly being spotted putting two pairs of Levi's jeans in a shopping bag and then trying to walk out:

Macy's security personnel stopped Morales and brought him to the store's Loss Prevention Office. During a standard search for weapons, a special police officer found in his waistband a Hi-Point C9 9mm handgun loaded with three rounds of ammunition. A small quantity of a substance believed to be marijuana was also recovered from his pants pocket.

Morales is scheduled to return to Boston Municipal Court on June 15 to on the charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded handgun, and larceny under $250
