Stabbed in the arm on Harvard Avenue

AlertNewEngland tweets the stabbing happened outside the Common Ground, 83 Harvard Ave., early this morning, after closing.

The bar was closed and this happened on the street.

Adam,

I understand that you are just passing along info but this tweet is incorrect and shouldn't be given the audience that you are giving it.

While you do clarify that it happened after closing and outside it would be better for local businesses if you and other news organizations cite reputable and accurate information.

Thanks for thinking about this.

Are you the owner or

Are you the owner or something? LOL.

So...what part of it is incorrect?

Was the guy stabbed in the arm?

Outside of Common Ground?

While the bar was closed?

If the answer is "yes" to all three of the above, what exactly are you complaining about?

The original tweet

Could be read as meaning the guy was stabbed inside the bar, when he wasn't (I've been following AlertNewEngland for awhile now; I suspect what happened was the police called it in as "at the Common Ground").

Given the way liquor licenses work in Boston, it theoretically could be a major issue, even though bars in this town have gone unpunished for far worse. Technically, even if the guy were stabbed outside, but right in front, it could be an issue - if it happened during or right after business hours, which it didn't.

Big deal...

It took an actual murder for The Kells to finally get shut down. A random stabbing -- not an entirely uncommon occurrence on this stretch of Harvard Ave late on a weekend night -- that happened to take place in front of this bar seems unlikely to affect it.

I calls 'em as I hear 'em

That's exactly what happened; the location was given out as "at Common Ground". Sometimes the locations that emergency services give out are incorrect, perhaps even across the street, if they are just using a landmark. I only "tweet" things once police/fire/EMS are on scene and confirm the facts, but sometimes we don't update dispatch with our exact location, especially if the original landmark was close enough. Either way, I just put out what I hear, or what people send in to me. If I were a journalist, that might be irresponsible, but alas, I'm not. I'm pretty sure the licensing board bases their decisions off of police reports and investigations, and not my tweets.
In short, if you're curious what all those sirens are, then I'm a handy source of information. If you want fact checking, you'd be better off waiting for the evening news.
