What is Roxbury?

Where Dimock Street meets Washington Street is right next to Egleston Square, whom many consider a part of Jamaica Plain. I have a friend who lives up the hill from Washingston Street, away from Dimock Street, off Humboldt Ave, and the part of town she lives in according to the postal service is Dorchester. But other data has pointed it out as Roxbury, so she calls it Dorxbury. But where she lives is right across the street from Franklin Park, which many consider to be in Jamaica Plain.

What are the lines that divide Jamaica Plain from Roxbury and Roxbury from Dorchester?

Well, here’s the reality. All of Franklin Park is Roxbury, except one tiny part near Roslindale, which is Roslindale. The boarder between JP and Roxbury runs along Glen Road, which becomes Green Street as it crosses Washington Street, and continues until it hits the Southwest corridor. Everything east of the SW corridor is Roxbury until it hits Melnea Cass Blvd. Therefore Mission Hill is a part of Jamaica Plain. The opposite side of Melnea Cass, is the South End. The final dividing line runs from where Melnea Cass hits Mass Ave, where it runs along Mass Ave to Dorchester Ave, and then runs along Dorchester Ave until it hits Harambee park in Mattapan

So, Egleston Sq is Roxbury. Jackson Sq is Jamaica Plain. Where I used to live on Robeson St., off of Forest Hills Ave., is Roxbury, even though every single person who lives in that part of town considers themselves residents of Jamaica Plain. Where my friend lives off of Humbolt Ave, is Roxbury. The Dimock hospital, as you have stated, is in Roxbury. Also in Roxbury, are countless condos housing the well-to-do, who believe they live in Jamaica Plain, and have paid inflated prices based on that false information.

So, now we know.

Jamaica Plain? Roxbury? Jamaicabury?

Let me begin by saying comments about neighborhood borders don't really have a place under an article about a shooting. Perhaps the discussion should have been more about the crime, or the brazenness of a shooting in broad daylight on a busy street. Not whether or not it was Jamaica Plain or Roxbury.

That being said, I think your facts are incorrect and, since I am one of those so called "well-to-do" who lives in an "inflated" price condo on Washington St., let me set the record straight.

According to the City of Boston, and their "My Neighborhood" page for 2969 Washington St., we live in Jamaica Plain. We vote in JP, we our city councilor represents JP, our local police station is in JP, etc.

The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council also considers that part of Washington St. Jamaica Plain.

I submit that the person commenting either isn't from Boston or does not know her city very well.

"Always Strapped"

Yea, it doesn't really matter what borderline is where. This is the general area where dudes from Humboldt Ave and the Roxbury projects hang out and beef with each other. The warmer weather is coming. Looking at the numbers ... it look like it's gonna be another hot summer.

Unfortunately, the city won't understand that the more summer jobs you slash ,the more that these headlines will appear.

These kids need a summer job , if not then you know where to find them.
