Instead of dough, North End bakery worker punched another employee

An argument over access to information on a computer last month led to a fight that left a worker at Bova's Bakery on Salem Street with a black eye and a bloody nose.

Anthony Bova, co-owner of the North End institution, acknowledged his son, also named Anthony, got into a disagreement with another worker on May 2 that ended with his son punching the guy out and lunging at him with a knife.

He told the Boston Licensing Board today he did not report the incident to police because "it wasn't like a big deal," and he thought he'd settled the matter by having the beaten worker take a few days off. Instead, the worker called police and stopped showing up for work. He said he told his son that "any frustration you have, you better have it outside; you can't involve the bakery."

The younger Anthony Bova was arraigned on May 10 in Boston Municipal Court on a charge of assault and battery and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, which reports bail was set at $500.

The licensing board decides Thursday what, if any action, to take related to Bova's food-serving license because of the fight.

A few years ago, I witnessed a Bova employee plow a car out of a parking space with his car, park his car in the newly opened space, then go into work, leaving the plowed car blocking the intersection of Salem and Prince Sts. Nice people those Bovas.
