Police: Daughters turn dad in for OUI after he takes granddaughter on drunken ride and crashes car

Boston Police report arresting a Hyde Park man on drunk-driving charges - and that his two daughters delivered him to the police station for booking.

According to police, Jose Avillan, 47, of Hyde Park, plowed his Taurus into the back of a mini-van on Hyde Park Avenue - with his three-year-old granddaughter in the front seat - around 9:30 p.m. The car's airbags deployed and paramedics who happened to be in the vicinity saw cuts on the girl's face, but the man said everything was fine and drove off before police could arrive. The paramedics tried to follow him down Hyde Park Avenue, but he sped up and lost them, police said.

Not long after, police say, officers responded to a call about a little girl at 3 Sunnyside Ct. in Hyde Park with cuts on her face. Police say officers found the girl - and a heavily damaged Taurus:

The three year old complained of face pain to officers who observed swelling to her left cheek, small scratches to her left cheek and left eye brow. The three year old girl was transported to Children’s Hospital for her injuries. Officers located an empty Corona Light bottle wedged between the drivers and passenger seat of the Ford Taurus.

The driver, however, was nowhere to be seen. But then two women showed up at E-18 with Avillan:

The mother of the three year old said that she received a phone call while at work telling her that her daughter had been in an accident. She was then picked up by her sister and while in the back seat of her sisters car making her way home to check on her daughter she observed her father walking on River Street stumbling while he was walking. She jumped out of her sisters car and confronted him about his reckless actions. They then drove their father to the police station. All officers present could observe the suspects speech to be slurred, his eyes bloodshot, and unsteadyness and lack of balance. Officers could also smell alcohol on his breath. A field sobriety test was conducted inside of the police station. Jose Avillan, 47, of Mattapan, failed the sobriety test and was placed under arrest for OUI.

Innocent, etc.

That's a heartbreaking line for an adult child to have to take with a parent, but it sounds like the daughters may have been at the end of their rope.

God bless and hope the little girl is ok, and hope the fellow in question gets sober before he destroys himself, his family, or some innocent bystander.

Kudos to the adult daughters for being the real grownups and doing the right thing - by their family and by the rest of us.
