West Roxbury man probably won't be able to order takeout from any local restaurants for awhile

Boston Police report arresting a West Roxbury man on charges he took so much exception to a food delivery guy driving on his block he got in his car, chased the guy, then threatened him with a gun.

Police in turn took exception to that sort of alleged behavior and arrested Robert M. MacCormack, 32, and seized his gun, his license to carry and several hundred rounds of ammunition. According to police:

The victim reported that he was en route to make a delivery when he first saw the suspect glaring at him as he passed him on Pender Street. The victim continued on his way and made his delivery and en route back to the restaurant again while on Lagrange St. the suspect pulled up next to him in a dark colored car. The victim reported that the suspect then stated to him, "Why are you driving through my neighborhood like that? There are kids in my neighborhood!" The victim told officers that he responded that he would not jeopardize any children's safety since he has children of his own and also knowing that he had not been driving in a negligent or reckless manner that would cause harm to any children. The victim then reported that the suspect yelled out to him, "Cut through my neighborhood like that again, and I'm going to take your car! Stay out of my neighborhood!" The victim reported to officers that as the suspect was yelling at him through the car window, he pulled out a black colored handgun and pointed it at the victim.

MacCormack was charged with assault by means of a dangerous weapon and improper storage of a firearm.

Innocent, etc.

Although I am generally for very strict gun laws and have no use for firearms myself, this does not seem to be a situation where stricter gun laws (aside from an outright ban of all guns) would have helped. This person is clearly un-hinged and would have found something else to brandish at the delivery guy to keep him out of "his" neighborhood had he not had a gun. That said, what this incident shows is that the NRA is a real mess. The fact that someone this un-hinged is not only a member of the NRA, but an instructor, is incredible. What was once an organization focussed on hunters' rights and sportsmanship has become a haven for a fringe segment of society who looks to guns either as an outlet for agression or as part of more general anti-authoritarian, anti-government philosophy premised on the phallacy that the Founding Fathers created the right to bear arms to sanctify the right to overthrow the government through violence. Either the NRA needs to take a look in the mirror and purge itself of this element, or the responsible members of the NRA need to break off and found a new group more akin to what the NRA used to be. It is doubtful that the former will ever happen, as the "R" in NRA stands more for Revenue than anything else these days.
