Two alleged gun-packing drug dealers charged with attacking cops during stop

Norberto Barreto, 31, and Arkie Swinson, 30, both of Dorchester, were arraigned today on two counts each of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, for an incident Friday morning that started on Cheney Street in Roxbury, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Officers patrolling the area due to complaints of gang and drug activity watched the two pull up around 9:15 a.m. in Barreto's 1992 Accord and then conduct what appeared to be a drug sale. The officers followed the car, then ordered it to pull over on Seaver Street:

As officers approached the car, Barreto allegedly moved to the right within the driver's seat and reached over to the passenger’s area; when the officers reached the car, Swinson put his right hand in his pants pocket and had his left hand tight against his waistband.

When the officers ordered Swinson to show his hands, Swinson allegedly refused. The officers began to take Swinson from the car when Swinson allegedly punched one of them and yelled to his compatriot.

"Go, go, go!" he allegedly yelled.

The car hit both officers; neither was seriously hurt, the DA's office says.

They then led police on a chase down several roads in the area - a couple while driving the wrong way. Officers finally stopped them on Nazing Street, the DA's office says. Officers, accompanied by gun-sniffing dogs, found a 9mm semi-automatic Hi-Point Luger near the corner of Nazing and Maple streets; not long after, somebody claled police to report the same type of gun lying on Supple Street.

Because of a 2005 gun conviction, Barreto is also charged as a second or subsequent offender; because of a 2009 drug distribution conviction, Swinson is charged as an armed career criminal. Roxbury District Court Judge Pamela Dashiell set both men's bail at $10,000. Swinson, however, will not be going anywhere; Dashiell revoked his bail on a pending assault case, the DA's office reports.

Innocent, etc.

Can't wait for his excuse to

Can't wait for his excuse to make the papers.

"Sorry your honor, I just felt like assaulting a cop, I didn't want him to pepper spray me! You should be thanking me for not using my weapon. I know I'm a career criminal, but I pinky promise I won't do it again! Just please don't send me to the big boy house where I will be taken advantage of and used as a sex slave. Pretty pretty pleeeeaseeeee?"

Yeah, but

I wouldn't make light of prison rape. That's an atrocity that has no place in a first-world country that prides itself on freedom and justice.

It is true, I am impressed

It is true, I am impressed with the inmates who are actually able to turn their lives around. Not because of their past, but because despite the hellish atmosphere in prison,, they are able to rise above it and be somebody.

no such thing...

...As a "9mm semi-automatic Hi-Point Luger."

What you mean to say is "9mm Luger semi-automatic Hi-Point." "Hi-Point" is the (extremely low-quality) gun manufacturer. "9mm" is the bullet diameter. "Semi-automatic" means that the gun automatically loads the next round into the chamber when you fire each shot, but that one trigger pull is required for each shot. The part that tripped you up was "Luger," and for good reason: "9mm Luger" is one name for an ammunition type also referred to as "9x19mm" and "9mm Parabellum." All of these names refer to the same cartridge, and do _not_ refer to the model of firearm that fires the round.

Yes, the Germans had a gun called the "Luger" that fired this 9mm cartridge (hence the name "9mm Luger" for the cartridge), but I guarantee you that there are no drug dealers in Boston toting WWII-era German Lugers (they go for $1k-$2k on the legal market and are not nearly as reliable as the many cheaper modern semi-automatics out there).
