This isn't the first time

This isn't the first time that area has been in the crime news. I don't know why, either. Seems like a perfectly safe place, but there was a stabbing or shooting there not that long ago.

You must be kidding !

That area is a shit hole !

It's not

a shit hole.. I think not. I live on Fairmount Hill, not far from here, and I feel perfectly save walking around this exact area. I'm sure Adam G can comment on where this "stabbing" took place. Keep in mind this is near where is an "assisted living housing" complex is which someone was murdered there a few years back.

A few words, isolated incident. The same thing could happen in your quiet beach community.

This 36 year resident abides...

Isolated incident? Yes. You're going to get those. About two decades ago, we had one neighbor stab another right across the street from us in the three decker. We also had bikers living there and bringing their motorcycles up the stairs.

On the other hand, a couple of months ago I cut through the Joe Malone housing and three kids sitting there decided it would be great to call me a "f****** gingerbread man" and pretend to chase after me. Since then, I haven't gone through there and have actually walked around that area during the night.

To reply to an earlier poster who stated that Hyde Park was becoming another Roxbury - as I was heading up the ramp from the commuter rail station, someone tagged the words "Hell Park" in red; they also had the memorial (complete with candles and wine bottles) for the kid who got creamed by the Acela train about two months ago.

Cleary Square has become trashy and unwelcoming - not only do you get the three dollar stores, the fried chicken joint, and the Subway, but you get the three convenience stores whose customers leave their courtesy and manners by the door, and the numerous "for sale by owner" storefronts that seem to open and close within a three month time span. Even the route 32 bus - the crown jewel of Hyde Park transit - has become an overcrowded joke. Everyone seems to pile on that bus as if it's the last one ever and again seems to put aside courtesy for a me-first attitude.

A Subway - oh, the horror! As

A Subway - oh, the horror! As if Cleary Square never had sub shops before. And people piling on the bus? yeah, that's new. Thirty years ago, people would volunteer to stand in the rain for the next bus so that you could sit in comfort. Right.

a Subway makes a neighborhood a slum?

Tell that to folks in Davis Square, Union Square, Powderhouse Circle, etc. They're pretty low-key and innocuous as chain restaurants go.

Touche about Subway...

This is what I get for being being a long time customer of Mama Mia's, whose Atomic Subs and Capicola and Cheese were a food mainstay in the 1980s until it closed.

No, Subway does not make Hyde Park a slum. I actually go to that Subway occasionally; the place is much cleaner and the food is fresh when you get it.

My sincere apologies...and now you've made me hungry for a footlong Black Forest Ham...curse you, Ron (in a comical, non-evil way)!

Apparently the people who

Apparently the people who don't live near Cleary Sq., don't get to be harassed by the growing number of homeless panhandlers stalking those convenience stores. Actually go down there and try and shop. Even Shaws is getting worse. The employees are so rude and lazy that have started leaving products in the cardboard boxes and just cutting out the fronts.

I don't doubt the people claiming what a great area it is shop in Dedham.

Pretty nice

Pretty nice neighborhood.
It's HP and has it problems like other residential 'hoods near the urban core but that's a pleasant quiet area with nearby parkland.

Fairmount Hill is another

Fairmount Hill is another world. I live 2 blocks away from this and the number of crimes in this area has exploded. There have been drive-by shootings, punks popping off 9mm rounds into street signs, pulling guns on my neighbors. One place a few doors down had some crack addicts in it and they were always getting trashed and fighting, kicking in their doors etc. They're gone, but the scars remain.

The cops are close and are really great, but there is no denying that this area is on its way to becoming another Roxbury. Just look at Cleary Sq. 3 dollar stores, countless dumps of beauty salons, and now just junk clothing stores. The economic downturn is undeniable.

I've lived in Hyde Park my entire adult life, but I'm moving my family out.

roxbury??

another roxbury????go to the boston police website and compare the crime of roxbury and hyde park. hyde park is nothing like roxbury i've lived here my whole life its the city, stuff happens but it is in no way turning or going to turn into roxbury ha

I've lived here over 20 years

I've lived here over 20 years myself. Businesses have fled. And who do you think is moving in? Again, take a serious look at Cleary Sq. No one wants to do business in Hyde Park anymore. Why? The money has gone.

With only dollar stores and slummy second hand clothes shops, of which there are now 3-4, who is going to want to buy into this neighborhood? Too many long term families are leaving. Yes, the mayor and some police officials are still here, and they are the only thing keeping this from happening sooner. But it is an inevitability. The core is rotting.

Troll droppings

A steaming pile of ignorant anon garbage.
In all seriousness, I think Adam should seriously consider allowing registered users only. Granted I say some stupid things, but at least I own them.

Yeah, seriously

I love how these people who've never stepped out of Hyde Park are arguing about whether it's "becoming Roxbury."

Restoring and reopening the closed theatre would help

Perhaps it could be developed into a regional attraction similar to the Somerville Theatre? That would help the entire square and all of the businesses surrounding it.

Is Hyde Park Main Streets still active?

and if so, what are they doing about the problems you cite? It sounds like they have been less effective than their counterparts in Roslindale and Fields Corner.

Yes, but in Wayland or Sudbury..

they're called "crimes of passion". Whereas in HP, it's just "life in the big city". Six of one...
