Police looking for pack in Esplanade robbery attempt

State and Boston police are looking for a group of eight men on charges they surrounded a woman jogging on the Esplanade around 9:45 p.m., Saturday.

State Police report the woman, a 31-year-old Cambridge resident, was jogging near Community Boating when "several men, who had been among a group that was sitting in that area, came toward her and surrounded her." State Police say the woman was able to break past the man and ran toward the Museum of Science - where she found a state trooper working a detail. In a statement, they add:

Women who use the Esplanade for recreational activities are reminded to be aware of their surroundings, to walk or run with a companion if possible, to stay in well-lit areas, and to carry a charged cell phone at all times. Anyone who feels threatened or uncomfortable, or who sees anything that does not look right, should immediately call 911 on a cell phone to be connected to a State Police dispatcher.

State Police say they do not believe the incident is related to a series of unsolved sexual attacks on the Esplanade, which have all involved a single would-be rapist, not a group of robbers.

Its not coyote sightings in Boston that I fear,it is the return of the Wolfpacks that seem to everywhere.

Men running alone would never be subject to being surrounded by a pack of possible thieves or thugs looking for a group beat-down target.

Right.

I like how the minute you mention Occupy Boston hooligans possibly being involved,, your post gets taken down. no freedom of speech on this site.

he doesn't need to let any of us speak. You are confusing speech and property rights. This is not the public square - you have no rights here.

These muggings are crimes of opportunity that happen because the park is little used at night at this time of year, and the muggers can get away without witnesses.

I realize we're starting to get into cold weather, but I wonder if continuing Hatch Shell events regularly into September and October would reduce crime in the area by greatly increasing the number of people who are using the park at night.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were more cops along the river at night instead of babysitting people who can't get jobs or people with nothing better to do?

Oh no, don't mention OccupyAnything with negativity they are the 99 percent...of the problem.

I've had a 20 yr career and been laid off about 7 times...shocking I found another job (tech job). Then again, I didn't have a liberal arts degree.

Been trying to hire for two new developer positions for 8 months, people just either aren't qualified or don't like the location / at market salary and beenfits.

Gods and Clods man. Gods and Clods.
