Police: Firefighter KOs drunk guy who came after him with a bottle

Boston Police report arresting a man on charges he tried to beat up firefighters responding to a condo water leak on Huntington Avenue Sunday night.

Police say they found Eric French, 47, on the ground at Huntington and Gainsborough around 10:25 p.m. - where "the suspect was knocked to the ground and detained until police arrived."

Police say when a firefighter left 270 Huntington Ave. to investigate why French was carrying on, French attempted to punch him and hit him in the head with a 40-oz. bottle. The firefighter, however, quickly gained control of the situation - and French - and he and other firefighters made sure he didn't go anywhere until police arrived. Police say responding officers "picked up on a substantial odor of alcohol emanating from the suspect."

French was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a public servant and being a disorderly person.

The Fire Department reports the firefighter and his fellow jakes then returned to the building to deal with a burst fourth-floor sprinkler head that flooded two apartments on the floor below, got into the fire-alarm system and forced the shutdown of the building's elevator.

Innocent, etc.

French has a lengthy record that includes breaking into Locke-Ober and then, after a judge let him off with 18 days served awaiting trial, broke into it again.
