Charlestown man charged as fare-jumping cabbie robber

Boston Police report a Charlestown man who jumped out of a cab without paying early this morning attacked the driver when he got out to demand the driver's money and then tried to flee with the man's wallet, only to be tripped up by his own feet.

Carlos Martinez, 33, was charged with fare evasion and assault with intent to rob (unarmed), following the incident outside 42 Park St., shortly before 1 a.m.

The taxi driver stated that when they arrived to the suspect’s requested destination, the suspect jumped out of the taxi without paying his fare.

The taxi driver stated to officers he followed the suspect and asked for the owed fare. The suspect assaulted the victim in the chest area. The taxi driver attempted to flee from the suspect and the suspect grabbed his jacket. The taxi driver's jacket came off and the suspect went through the pockets and took his wallet. The suspect dropped the wallet and fell to the ground attempting to retrieve it.
