Police hunt two for spitting at T driver, then threatening him

MBTA Transit Police are looking for a teen they say responded to a bus driver's demand he pay his fare by spitting at him and for his pal, who motioned as if he had a gun and uttered a threat. According to police, the video shows what happened around 8:45 p.m. last Wednesday on a 28 bus at Warren and Hazlewood streets in Roxbury:

The bus driver requested he pay the fare, or exit the bus. Suspect # 1, who had money in his hand, again refused, but put a quarter in the fare machine. The 51-year old bus driver again told him to pay the fare or get off the bus. Suspect # 1 then became agitated stating "You know what man," then spat directly in the driver's face, hitting his eyes, forehead, mouth area and the window. He then fled the bus. At that point, Suspect # 2 stated: "Motherfucker, you want some of this, you really want this," while gesturing to his waistband. The bus driver stated he believed Suspect # 2 was motioning his hand as if he had a firearm concealed in his waistband. Suspect # 2 then fled the bus.

Among other evidence, police now have a swab coated in the first suspect's saliva.

I just don't understand some people sometime. I really think some of these 'ghetto' dudes get off on just being total jackasses. Hello, you board a bus, you pay the fare. Its simple. no arguing no nothing.. but of course some of these guys seem to think that they have a big chip on their shoulder, and the world owes them something.

I feel sorry for the bus driver.. actually all bus drivers in general. This is the kind of crap they have to put up with everyday.

Incendenty, the T has to BEG drives to drive routes in the ghetto areas of town. And why would any driver want too? So they can deal with this bs daily.. no thanks.

The thugs are so used to getting off with slaps on the wrist, intimidating ordinary people on the street, and collecting government benefits rather than working, that they think they are entitled to be assholes. It's no different than the rich brats, whom collect a trust fund rather than government check, there's no accountability or personal responsibility so both groups act like morons.

In some countries, you would be sent away to do hard labor for a year or two. Or maybe for a few lashings, in other countries. That sorta stuff makes you think twice about doing stupid or violent stuff like this.

I'm a fan.

Yes, poor people can be them too. Still, it seems to be a resume requirement to be a CEO.

Food for thought.

let anyone on whether they pay or not. most of my friends have moved on to different T jobs because driving the bus is so stressful. they all figured it was better for them to let a few punks ride for free than to find out if they had a gun or were crazy.

Part of the problem is that the MBTA police won't put plainclothes officers on these routes.

That's a great advertisement for public transportation. I'm sure that legislators from outside the metro Boston area will be happy to raise taxes on their constituents, when bus drivers have to let punks ride for free to stay alive.

Where's the MBTA police doing random ticket inspections like they do in other countries? Why not huge $400 fines for failing to pay?

Hell, in other countries it's not uncommon for the inspectors to be in flak jackets carrying MP5's.

You solve two problems with one.

Fares then get paid, and these tools that think they're above the system (who usually have fallen though cracks elsewhere and are know to the police) put themselves under even more scrutiny. Like car violations, they'll make it easy to spot, detain and bring them in on other more serious charges after being picked up for less egregious stuff.

How are they supposed to do pointless bag checks at one entrance of a three-entrance station, stand around en masse and drink coffee at North Station, and patrol the buses all at the same time?

I feel like a broken record, but I have long maintained that the TSA-funded T bag checkpoints make riders and T operators less safe, for this very reason.

At a checkpoint at Back Bay a month or two ago, there were at least nine T cops "assisting" the three TSA agents. Anyone know the number of T cops on duty during a typical rush hour?

The bag checkpoints have done nothing but change the location of the MBTA transit cop coffee & discussion hour from the traditional location outside Park Street Station to inside the turnstyles of a random station.

I watched the video- it seems like he was trying to pay and there was a problem with the fare box/fare collection? I'm confused. The short report made 'refusal to pay fare' seem more blatant; in the video it is ambiguous.
Not the spitting in someone's face is ever ok..

1)get on, swipe a card with not enough money, and just keep walking, hoping the driver doesn't care or notice.

2)Swipe card without enough money, take passive pity-me approach. "Aw shoot dawg, I thought there was enough" and hope the driver lets you on.

3)Have a mangled CharlieTicket that the machine keeps trying to read. The ideal ticket is not obviously mangled, but causes the machine to retry so many times that the bus driver gets annoyed and waves you on.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Some people are serial offenders at this, and the good drivers are the ones who know who they are and don't let them get away with it.

Meanwhile on the 70 right now at Central Sq, a passenger didn't have enough change, the driver wouldn't let him on, and the guy apparently threw the change at the driver.

The driver turned off the bus and walked out to summon cops nearby, and the standing-room only bus sits as paperwork is filed.

This is ridiculous. I often feel bad for T drivers, particularly when local high schools get out and kids feel the need to prove to their friends how cool they are by treating the drivers so poorly. The drivers end up being security officers, babysitters, therapists etc.

At the same time, I am often one of the individuals asking for mercy from the T driver because there isn't enough money on my card. It's not because I'm trying to skip my fair - it's because I never know how long it will take for the money to show up on the card. It says after 5am the next day, but this is rarely the case. Sometimes it's mid-day, sometimes it's two days later.
